Rage of Angels [VHS] Review

This highly successful tv-miniseries is perhaps the one that ignited the success of the miniseries genre. Although, there are others who came before this, it was RAGE OF ANGELS who ignited the "mania." Of course, there was Richard Chamberlain starring in all those other successful miniseries based on books and him as a King of the genre but it was Jaclyn Smith's "Jennifer Parker" that gave the glitter and excitement and that finally,a woman is about to claim a throne and she really shine in this beautifully adapted version of Sidney Sheldon's novel. All of a sudden, people started rushing to read and re-read the book and even the video released during the 80's was a big hit. People who have seen the movie on tv wanted to get a copy and you can hear people talking about the movie during lunch time or coffee break.Ive never seen Jaclyn Smith more beautiful and her on-screen chemistry with Ken Howard is probably one of the sexiest that has emerged in the small screen for a long time. This one is a worthy addition to your collection. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComment

Seance on a Wet Afternoon Review

Stunning film of the staged kidnapping of a child by a demented medium and her cuckolded, guilt-ridden husband. Beautifully photographed in b&W, the film has a grey, somber feel to it that illustrates the emptiness of the childless couple's lives. The plan is to kidnap the child then stage a seance to help "find" the child to further enhance the medium's reputation and career. The husband trembles with fright and guilt while the medium is convinced that this is the "answer". She is "guided" by Arthur---her "spirit" guide---that is actually the child they lost at birth as stillborn. ASTOUNDING performances by stage actress Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough as the couple carry this film brilliantly to it's gripping conclusion. The subject matter is sensitive (especially today) but the film is a powerful masterwork of mood and psychological character study. I strongly recommend this for true cinema explorers. The DVD transfer is nice and crisp and the sound is clear. It's not for everyone---especially sensitive types---but it's still a must see for those who like engrossing and fascinating films that just don't come along that often. Filmed in 1964, it's as fresh and riveting now as it MUST have been back then. A true classic.

Lennon [VHS] Review

Lennon-A Tribute is without doubt the best tribute album made for J. Lennon. "Eight Days A Week" performed by Lou Gramm (who was the vocalist of the hard rock band Foreigner) is my favorite song in this album. "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" performed by Terence Trent D'arby is good too, because D'Arby was another successful singer of the 1980's. His style is really distinct. "Working Class Hero" performed by Cyndi Lauper shows how a new wave singer can turn an original Lennon song to a nice contemporary piece. The same is true for "Ticket To Ride" performed by Natalie Cole. "I Feel Fine" performed by Wet Wet Wet explicitly proves that Wet Wet Wet's vocalist knows very well what he's doing (just like John Lennon?) And you're very likely to know "Cold Turkey" by Lenny Kravitz and "Imagine" by Elton John if you're into these artists. "Back In The USSR" by Bill Joel is not John's song, but the producer must have included it as Joel and his band had an extraordinary performance of this song. "Don't Let Me Down" performed by Hall & Oats and "Ballad of John & Yoko" performed by Dave Edmonds manage to entertain me like their original versions. And surprisingly, there's the "Dear Prudence" performed by Sean Ono Lennon who is John's younger son. Though Sean Ono Lennon's performance is not bad (in fact it's just as good as the other artists' renditions) I'd prefer Julian Lennon (his older son) had sung this song. And towards the end, there's Ringo Starr singing "I Call Your Name"; it's like a Traveling Wilburys song because Tom Petty is on the bass and Jeff Lynne on electric guitar. And just a few words for the VHS version: Its picture and sound quality is superb (as good as DVD).

Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru [VHS] Review

"The Bad Sleep Well" is a great movie. Imagine taking the major characters of "Hamlet," and casting them in a new plot. Revenge for the death of a father is still the issue, but with very different methods. The world of the salaryman is dark and cold, and only a dark and cold man can succeed. I am reminded of Nietzsche: "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." This may be one of Kurosawa's best films. The mood is perfect. The scenes are perfect. Mifune is perfect. He wears a suit with the same danger as he wears his Kimono. His briefcase is no less deadly than his sword. As a Kurosawa trademark, the ending is an exclamation point rather than a period. All the wrong people are dead, and all the wrong people walk away clean. This movie is not pleasant. It is, however, very good. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkComment Comment

Clarissa [VHS] Review

Samuel Richardson's 18th century novel of vice and virtue, revenge and manipulation begins with famously virginal CLARISSA (Acorn) Harlowe inheriting her grandfather's huge estate. But she has no interest in wealth and passes it to her father, ignoring her siblings James and Bella.

Clarissa also claims no interest in marriage but notices her sister's current beau, the notorious lady's man Robert Lovelace. Angry and jealous at being passed over, and with their parents approval, James and Bella try to force Clarissa into marrying the repulsive Solmes, a man of "material advantage." That only pushes a desperate Clarissa into Lovelace's arms, a man she does not trust but who quickly becomes obsessed with her, even though all his tried and true seduction tricks fail.

So begins the great BBC production from the early 90s. Anyone who has seen it will surely remember the exciting twists and shocks of this magnificent miniseries now on DVD for the first time.

If it all sounds stodgy, don't be deceived, this is the granddaddy of all the dangerous liaisons copycats (including "Dangerous Liaisons").

Everything about this fast moving show is top notch: acting, screenplay, production values, and direction. I can't think of a better description of this absolutely riveting drama than the original press release: "Vice was his weapon, virtue hers. Love would destroy them both."

Even if British drama is not your cup of tea, sip this delicious brew.

An Ungentlemanly Act Review

This is a very good, made-for-TV 1992 movie that apparently fairly accurately depicts the opening salvos of the Falkland-Islands war between Argentina and Great Britain. The events shown take place over an approximately 24-hour period on 1-2 April 1982. Surprisingly, only one person died on that first day, although subsequent hostilities claimed 255 British and some 645 Argentine lives. The always watchable Ian Richardson gives an excellent performance as the beleaguered governor. There is a fair amount of humor--some of it black humor, which testifies to the absurdity of war in general and this little war in particular.

Bonus materials include cast biographies, a detailed (26 frames!) timeline describing events from 2 Feb. to 12 Oct. 1982, and a brief fact file for the Falkland Islands. The DVD is only in standard (4:3) aspect ratio and, especially in the first third or half, focus is very soft and colors are off (on the reddish side). Nevertheless, the movie is quite viewable and has some good scenery shots and superb performances.

Viva Zapata! [VHS] Review

I really enjoyed this film directed by Elia Kazan with a screenplay by John Steinbeck (his only credited screenplay). Their vision of the Revolution is at once both impossibly romantic as well as bitterly cynical. The romance lies in the pure-hearted desire of Emiliano Zapata to bring justice and land reform to `the people'. The cynicism is expressed in the constant betrayal and manipulation of the Revolution by men who are either weak, self-seeking, or who have absolutely no commitment to justice or to `the people. Then there is the character of Fernando, deliciously played by Joseph Wiseman, the professional revolutionary who will never be satisfied with the attainment of objectives but only in incessant foment and agitation (in real life, Kazan detested doctrinaire Stalinists). Brando gives a brooding performance as the illiterate Zapata who inwardly burns at his inability to read. Anthony Quinn won an Oscar as Zapata's older brother, Eufemio. Virtually all of the characters in `Viva Zapata' are ground down by the realities of constant struggle of revolution. We are not to have illusions about the nature of Revolutions. And yet, Kazan and Steinbeck still leave us room to believe that the ideals of revolutionary struggle in themselves can be endowed with nobility and worthiness. The cinematography by Joe MacDonald is tasteful as is the music score by Alex North.
