Tristana [VHS] Review

Bunuel made this film after "Belle du Jour," using Catherine Deneuve as the heroine for both films. Whereas "Belle du Jour" was a foretaste of the sophisticated, chic French movies he made in the seventies, "Tristana" is in some ways a throwback to the rough, psychologically disturbing Spanish movies he made in the fifties and sixties. Both modes have their advantages, but for depth of feeling and psychological insight his Spanish films are clearly better. (His French films are more subtly satirical and international in scope, but he seems to have put less of his personal obsessions in them than in the films made in his native Spanish idiom. Or, rather, in the French films the obsessions now have the streamlined pedigree endowed upon them by the international film community's recognition of the World's Greatest Spanish Director.) Fernando Rey is the quintessential Spanish gentleman--a little bit of brutishness mixed in with the refinement--but he also gets to suggest emotional depths here (and in "Viridiana") that he did not in his other films with Bunuel where he seemed merely slyly charming and debonair. His desperate passion for Deneuve's Tristana is the emotional center of the film, despite the title's emphasis on the heroine. Deneuve's beauty is, of course, flawless and this suits Tristana's early stages when she's sweet, innocent, naive. But Deneuve's ice princess qualities prevent her from growing into the passion for the young artist (Franco Nero) that signal her growth as a woman. Both Rey and Nero register their emotions in a fierce animal way that is perhaps more purely Spanish (or Italian in Nero's case) than Deneuve's rarefied French blood will allow. She seems too cold and refined for big emotions. She's effective in the latter scenes where the script calls for her to become a coldhearted perverse witch, rudely dismissing a friendly greeting in the park in Toledo or scandalously exposing herself to the deaf mute son of her servant. But we don't see the hatred for Rey eating away at her that would allow her to have her final victory over him. We don't see the rage of this young girl toward the men who have let her down: first Rey for bringing her as a young girl into his household as his mistress, then Nero for allowing her to experience passion but disappointing her by returning her to Rey when she gets ill (she says to Nero, "Lope [Rey] would never have done that"--i.e., he's too proud and by implication more of a man). And then rage at Rey again for being stuck with him as his mistress for the rest of her years. When she condescends to marry Rey for appearances' sake, she cruelly laughs at his expectation that their union will be consummated. She's saying to him, "You silly man. I married you to please a priest and to inherit your wealth; don't delude yourself that I care about you." The dramatic situation is fascinating and it's somewhat frustrating that it's not entirely realized, largely due to Deneuve's limitations as an actress. Still, there have been few directors other than Bunuel who could bring so much to the material without softening it and sentimentalizing it. His style here is the plain, non-fussy technique that made him infamous (allegedly, he was once offered Fellini's cinematographer but turned him down in favor of the pedestrian camera work of a fellow Spaniard). Bunuel's style is an affront on bourgeois expectations of a rich mise-en-scene or a style that calls attention to its own artistic, innovative qualities. It can be slow going and even seem boring in the beginning stages, but in the best of Bunuel--as in "Tristana"--it can reward the patient viewer with psychological revelations of a truth uncommonly encountered on the screen.

Breakfast of Champions [VHS] Review

I have forgone watching this film until now, due to the very bad reviews and the fear of seeing one of my favourite authors pulverized in a travesty of one of his great works. But, one of my kids brought the film home, so I bit that bullet and sat down and watched it.
You've read enough reviews by now to get some gist of the story, so I won't go into that again, except to say that it has to do with the madness that results from living a completely amoral and unfulfilling existence. Vonnegut is, I believe, primarily a philosopher and a very funny man who has the rare talent of pulling all of life's absurdities into some kind of focus. It is true that his books do not translate well to the screen because it is his dialogue that is so important and this is generally excluded. However. Breakfast of Champions, however much it could not remain completely faithful to the book, stands as a work of art in its own right. It is very Terry Gilliam in its approach and over-all strangeness, including the plethora of eccentric characters; the cinematography is superb and the acting is brilliant. If you like Gilliam and cult films and David Lynch, you'll probably enjoy this film. If, on the other hand, you tend more towards Speilberg, you will probably find the film an incomprehensible mess. I absolutely do not agree with those who off-handedly bashed the film to pieces as there was a great deal of thought and even love put into this film, and the fact that some find it incomprehensible does not mean that it isn't, only that they are incapable of understanding and appreciating it.

The Boy Who Could Fly [VHS] Review

Mrs. Michaelson (Bonnie Bedelia) and her two children Milly (Lucy Deakins) and Louis (Fred Savage) have just moved into a new neighborhood following the recent death of their husband/Father. They hope to begin a new life and make new friends as the try to deal with the grief of their loss.

While trying to deal with her own personal grief, Milly finds an unexpected friend in Eric (Jay Underwood) the strange boy next store who never speaks and stands on the roof of his house with arms spread as though he were an airplane getting ready to take flight.

After a little investigation she discovers that Eric lost both parents in a plane crash and hasn't spoken or communicated with anyone since. Milly decides to break through the wall he has built around himself and lead him back to wholeness. As you might have guessed by now feelings other than just friendship soon develop between the two disinfranchised teenagers.

'The Boy Who Could' is an absolutely wonderful tale of hope, belief and the healing power of love. Lucy Deakins is one of the most charming and beautiful young women I've ever seen on film and was absolutely perfect for this role. The entire cast is excellent as well, especially Fred Savage as the little brother.

Truly one of the four or five greatest family movies ever made!

A Shot at Glory Review

Robert Duvall is the quenessential actor's actor. His ability to not only morph into any role but actually disappear entirely truly makes him a national treasure. However, for this 2000 release, he becomes an international treasure in the role of coach of a second tier Scottish football team. Duvalls weathered countenance is right at home among the equally grand and haggard Scottish countryside. Michael Keaton turns in a brief but potent turn as the team's owner, set on moving the team from its small Scottish home to a bigger stadium in Dublin. The film is more of a quiet character study than an all out sports film, but the game scenes infuse the movie with surprising passion and energy. Well worth owning.

Nuts [VHS] Review

Badly neglected by both audiences and critics at the time of it's original release, NUTS is a film that is ripe for reevaluation. Based on Tom Toplor's 1981 courtroom play, NUTS is definitely a dialogue-based film with little Hollywood flashiness. Though extremely well-written (by Toplor, adapting his own work with Darryl Ponicsan and Alvin Sargent) and sharply staged and directed by veteran Martin Ritt, it is the cast whom is really responsible bringing NUTS to life. Barbra Streisand gives an absolutely bravura performance that should have earned her an Oscar nomination. Alternately hilarious and frightening, Streisand is always mesmerizing as she delves so far into character.

Richard Dreyfess is nothing less than Streisand's equal as her public defender. He too was robbed of an Oscar nomination. The supporting cast is a top-notch ensemble of professional character actors (Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, James Whitmore, and Karl Malden), all of whom work their craft flawlessly. NUTS' screenplay does indulge in the predictability of some of the typical courtroom-plot conventions a little too often, but Toplor's absorbing script still deserves high praise for it's fascinating exploration of what constitutes as normality and whether or not the insane should be required to receive treatment. NUTS isn't going to win over any fans of 3-cuts-per-second action films, but it leave lovers of thought-provoking, expertly-acted dramas fascinated.

About the DVD: The picture quality is dark and grainy, however, I believe that this reflects the film's intended look. The sound is fine, and it's nice to have the film's trailer included. Streisand's intelligent and entertaining full-length commentary is the main extra here, and it more than makes up for the disappointing tracks she contributed to the WHAT'S UP, DOC? and MAIN EVENT DVDs.

Crazy in Alabama Review

This DVD is in my library of Great films because it was entertaining but at the same time had a moral I'd like my son to understand. It was comedic in its dealing with the theme of the decades of the 60's and the 70's ( and even today) yet at the same time dealt seriously and respectfully with the topic. There was one theme, of a group's search for recognition of humanity and inalienable rights in the story of a young woman who kills her husband for her freedom and a younger Black man who gives his life in a similar cause. The two ongoing stories were handled in a unique and entertaining manner.I will watch this DVD over again and enjoy it many times in the future. I will watch for other films directed by Antonio Banderas. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComment (1)

The Odd Couple II [VHS] Review

Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, two comedy greats, pair up again in this hilarious film. In The Odd Couple II, it has been 17 years since Oscar and Felix last saw each other. They are reunited to go to their children's wedding. Along the way they get arrested three times, encounter two lovely ladies Thelma and Holly, and get on each other's nerves no end. After making such a hit as Odd Couple, making a sequel was risky business, but Walter and Jack pulled it off! Sadly it would be their last film together.
