An American Tail [VHS] Review

How do you feel when you learn that one of your favorite films is to be released on DVD?

Of course, you feel very happy.

And what is your reaction when you finally got it? Well, there can be two:

1) This is great! A remastered version presented in widescreen! And all is just like I remember it, only better! And look at all those special features!

2) What... what is this?!

My reaction with An American Tail DVD was #2. Because what I got was a #2 job.

Here is a short and easy-to-follow guide for every studio out there, that is planning to release a movie on DVD:

1. Do not make unnecessary changes.
2. Do not make unnecessary edits.
3. If it was a theatrical feature, present it in widescreen.

Do you think Universal followed those easy steps?

Nope.

Here is an incomplete list of changes (without spoilers):

-New "humorous" sound effects were added to scenes where originally there weren't any. It's not funny.
-New voices were added to scenes without dialog (or any noise, for that matter).
-The alley mice's voices were re-dubbed. Why???
-The cover art was changes from a beautiful theatrical poster by Drew Struzan, only to be replaced with... something MUCH less appealing.

As I said, this small list of changes is incomplete. There is more.

It should be mentioned that there is also no widescreen. Enjoy your fullscreen! And do not forget to also enjoy the complete lack of any real special features to speak of!

An American Tail is a film that combines the talents of Steven Spielberg and Don Bluth. It was the first animated feature ever to out-compete Disney. It won several awards, including a Grammy for "best song". It was screened at the Jewish Film Festival in Atlanta in February 2011 to celebrate its 25 year anniversary. It was a film that grossed $84,000,000 worldwide (a record for animation at that time).

And THIS is how you treat such a film, Universal?! I cannot hear you, Universal!~!

Never Talk to Strangers Review

NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS is what is commonly referred to as an "erotic thriller", although it's eroticism is skimpy and the thrills don't come too often. Rebecca DeMornay (Risky Business, Trip to Bountiful) plays a repressed psychiatrist who is evaluating alleged serial killer Harry Dean Stanton to see if he should stand trial for his accused crimes. Stanton claims he is a multiple personality disorder victim and therefore can plead innocent due to insanity. DeMornay has a chance encounter with sexy Antonio Banderas and starts into a relationship with him. This alienates her best friend Dennis Miller who has been carrying a torch for DeMornay for some time. DeMornay starts receiving strange things in her mail: dead flowers, her dead cat, etc., etc., and soon it seems DeMornay may be the victim herself of a dangerous stalker. Is it Banderas? Miller? or perhaps even her estranged father (Len Cariou). Once all the secrets are peeled away, things aren't quite what they seem. While definitely not in the league of truly suspenseful films, NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS offers a sharp performance from DeMornay and Cariou particularly, and Banderas is effectively smoldering. Astute viewers, however, will see the end coming a mile away.

Gumshoe [VHS] Review

I am so pleased this long neglected film is finally being released on DVD! I have owned the VHS version for almost 20 years, and have worried the tape would degrade before it would become available on DVD. I re-watched my VHS of Gumshoe recently. Though it's been a few years since I had viewed it, it remains my favorite movie of both Albert Finney and Stephen Frears. To enjoy it you have to realize it is pastiche, a tongue in cheek tribute to those old film noir detective films of the 1940s. It is fun and interesting to watch from that aspect. The musical score is hysterical and the dialogue is fast, sharp, and laced with dry humor. Americans without an attuned ear to English accents may have a little trouble following, but it is worth the effort, even if you have to replay certain scenes.

Though it couldn't have been a challenging performance for an actor of Finney's caliber, he and the entire cast are terrific. If you are a British Cinema film buff, watching this 1972 production today, one almost feels as if you are seeing a piece of motion picture history, with an amazingly talented cast that includes Frank Finlay, Billie Whitelaw and Fulton Mackay. Add to this it was Stephen Frears movie directorial debut and Andrew Lloyd Webber is credited for the music.

Other trivia:
--Gumshoe was a Memorial Enterprises production. This is the production company formed by Finney and Michael Medwin in the 1960s that also produced breakthrough films such as Lindsay Anderson's "If" and "O Lucky Man" and Mike Leigh's first film, "Bleak Moments", and Finney's own masterpiece, "Charlie Bubbles". Medwin is credited as Producer on Gumshoe, as he is on most or all of M.E. productions.
--Finney is a confessed fan of the noir, detective genre and a fan of John Huston who among other classics directed the Maltese Falcon

Gumshoe is a "must see" for any fan of British Film, Stephen Frears or Albert Finney. It would also be enjoyable to fans of film noir detective movies, as well as anyone who appreciates good pastiche.

Product Description

Ten years after the fall of the Third Reich, former screen star Veronika Voss (Rosel Zech) live sin relative obscurity. One rainy night, she encounters Robert Krohn (Hilmar Thate), a young sportswriter who is unaware of her former fame. Fascinated by her personality and seductive charm, he continues seeing the faded actress, and eventually comes to discover the dark secrets behind her tragic downfall. Based on the true story of a World War II UFA star, Veronika Voss was the final episode of Fassbinder's trilogy on post-war Germany, following The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) and Lola (1981). It was also the last film that Fassbinder lived to complete.

Veronika Voss [VHS] Review

"Veronika Voss" is the noir\melodrama Hollywood never made, or is it the noir\melodrama Hollywood did make but Fassbinder borrowed from it? I'm not quite yet a strong admirer of Fassbinder's work, though I'm getting there. I've seen a few of his films and they have all pleased me on different levels, but, "Veronika Voss" is one of the best films I've seen from Fassbinder. The other one is "The Merchant of Four Seasons" (easily one of the greatest films I've ever seen). "Voss" immediately captures your attention with the beautiful black&white cinematography from Xaver Schwarzenberger. "Voss" though may recall the classic Billy Wilder film "Sunset Boulevard", and maybe that's done on purpose. While it would be foolish to try and compare the two obviously "Veronika Voss" gets away with things Wilder's film could never have. "Voss" tells the story of a once famous actress who was popular during WW2 and now finds herself a "has been". Whether she just has too much pride or is in denial I'm not sure, but she stands no real chance at a comeback. As it turns out Voss is addicted to morphine. It may even have been one of the reasons for her marriage to end. And just like "Sunset Boulevard" the former star finds herself attracted to a younger man. In this case Robert Krohn (Hilmar Thate). But the film, to me at least, isn't really a satire on the movie industry the way "Boulevard" was. "Voss" takes on the noir\melodrama. And does so in a very effective way. Rosel Zech who play Voss does a great job. She maintains our interest for the entire lenght of the film and displays a wide range of emotions. And I also enjoyed Cornelia Froboess, who plays Robert's extremely understanding girlfriend. She adds some humor to the film. If your just starting to get interested in Fassbinder's work "Veronika Voss" should win you over. Bottom-line: One of the best films I've seen so far from Fassbinder. I loved the black&white cinematography and the performance from Zech. Fassbinder makes the film Hollywood forgot to. Gokud kuroshakai [VHS] Review

This review for "Rainy Dog," refers to the region 4 import. Hopefully this latest version of the film is of better quality. This is a Masterpiece of a film. Moreover, it is one of those mobster films where the realistic portrayal of the actors and the cinematography give the viewer a vivid and more realistic portrayal of the world of criminals. The cameras visuals of the rain drenched streets, grimy alleys, run down hotel rooms, dark alleys, and menacing hallways give off a gritty realism that you are actually experiencing the streets of Taipei, which is where the film takes place. ALL of the actors make this film a standout. Furthermore, the near continuous rainfall in the film almost give the viewer the feeling that they are actually in the film. You can also feel the sense of dread and fear in the characters as they all give riveting performances.

This is a true Masterpiece of a film. Most of the films I have seen dealing with the criminal underworld are usually set in a nice environment. Everything looks too clean. Not with this film. There are not the usual beautiful women in bikinis and crime bosses smoking cigars on their yachts. None of that silly and stylized type of film we are all too familiar with. No, this film deals with reality: At least as close as one can come to the reality of this dark world of killers. The film is drenched with an atmosphere of hate, betrayal, backstabbing, deceit, and sweat. And done so in a way that make the viewer believe that they are watching a documentary. It's almost as if the viewer is following an event in real time as the criminal world is being exposed. The films narrative centers on one killer in particular. His name is Yuuji (Sho Aikawa). And for Yuuji, being a killer is all he knows. Forget the romanticized killer the film industry most often than not gives the audience. Yuuji knows fear, and when trouble arises he can run away as fast as the bullets he shoots.

The action in the film is not the intense style one usually sees in most crime dramas. Here it is more restrained. Yuuji is a former yakuza who makes his living as a hit man in the criminal underworld in Taiwan. However, he has new responsibilities now--a young son. While one cannot sympathize with a character such as Yuuji, you cannot help but feeling a bit of empathy for him. How did he wind up where he is? What made him the man he is now? And can he change? More importantly, will he change? Yuuji must not only contend with his profession and his son in tow, but also with a man who cannot return to Japan until he has seen Yuuji dead. Actor Tomorawa Taguchi [who is depicted on this DVD case] has been in pursuit of Yuuji for some time. We see Yuuji run away from him in one scene--and wonder, why? Yuuji is a hit man. Why doesn't he just take him out? Or is it only about money? Only if the job pays? Or is there more to these two men.

There are not too many crime films I like. Sure, some are enjoyable or maybe have that mixture of great action thrown in. But there is something incredibly different with this film. IT FEELS SO REAL. You don't get the impression the actors are acting, but really are what they are. Director Takashi Miike pulled off an incredible job with this film. There are so many realistically portrayed scenes in this film that it would take pages to list them. Moreover, it would ruin the film for you. The first time I saw this film years ago, I knew it was good. And it has been very hard for me to like many crime films because I use this film as a measuring stick. Sure there are some great action films that I enjoy. But when it come to realism--this is the one. If there was ever a film that gave a better description of the mind of a killer and the criminal underworld--I haven't found it. This is the most un-Miike of Miike's films. Highly recommended.

The Frugal Gourmet - Cooking with Wine (Six-Volume Boxed Set) [VHS] Review

This is Classic Jeff Smith. If you were a fan of the Frugal Gourmet series you will love this. He cooks like real people. This is "real-time" cooking. He chops his own ingredients and chats with the viewer like a friend. He interjects great anecdotes along with his recipies. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that most people who live with the heavily edited, pre-measured, multi-angle cooking shows from the modern cable networks may feel this show to be amaturish. But if, like me, you learned how to make gravy with Graham Kerr or Julia Childs, this is classic cooking of dishes real people will cook and eat. I will buy other Frugal Gourmet video sets as I can find them
