Gilbert & Sullivan - H.M.S. Pinafore [VHS] Review

I know that some Gilbert and Sullivan fanatics may complain loudly about tis video, but I am going to say how fantastic this production of Pinafore really is. Peter Marshal, despite some small imperfections in his role of Captain Corcoran, is a well-versed singer-actor. Equally up to his calibre is Frankie Howerd's Sir Joseph Porter. Howerd in his part ad-libs his dialogue not because he didn't learn his lines, but because he brings out the character of Sir Joseph perfectly well. He makes the character feel like a person with scrambled eggs in his brain, and I'm sure that his portrayal can spark off a laugh or two. The two lovers and Little Buttercup, excellently played, help to match those two principals, and the choruses of sailors and female relatives are very supportive. Alexander Faris's musical direction is a sheer delight form first bar to last. The only minor quibble is about the sound-quality. It seems so low-quality and the mixing is not well done. However, this does not detract from such an outstanding performance of this G&S great and this will be sure to find a happy fome in any classical video library.

The Kid Brother [VHS] Review

When I was younger, if you were to ask me, "who is your favorite silent comic?" My answer would be Harold Lloyd. And that was only because I felt sorry for him. Lloyd was always referred to as the "third genius" behind Chaplin and Keaton. His work has been greatly forgotten, and that's a pity. So, I was thought someone should like him, so I'll say he's my favorite. The trouble with Lloyd of course has been his films don't play on tv! One has to really search to see a movie with him in it. My local library has a collection of 2 reelers Lloyd did, and when I was younger that was my introduction into the world of Harold Lloyd. Now, when we think of Harold Lloyd's film we probably think of "The Freshman" (AFI named it one of the funniest comedies of all-time!) and the scene from "Safty Last" (Lloyd is hanging from outside a building onto the hands of a clock). "The Kid Brother" like all of Lloyd's other comedies are forgotten. But, this is his best film. Now, when I say best I don't mean this is his funniest. I don't believe it is. I personally laugh more when I watch "The Freshman", "Girl Shy", & "Speedy". But "The Kid Brother" is Lloyd's best movie because it's his most fully realized film. It's here Lloyd shows us he was actually a good actor and could carry a movie. He was good for more than just those two reelers that he did. He was able to carry an audience's attention with plot and acting not just sight gags. This is not to say this movie doesn't have it's share of sight gags or funny moments, it most certainly does. "The Kid Brother" for some reason reminds me of Keaton's "Steamboat Bill, Jr." both movies are about a son trying to get his father's respect. In this movie Lloyd plays Harold Hickory, the son of the local sheriff. Harold has two older brothers who his father seems to favor. Harold is left out of family gatherings and discussions. And he desperately seeks his father's approval. Of course as with any Lloyd comedy there will be a romantic sub-plot. But, it all works and everything adds up to the best movie Lloyd ever made. At least from what I've seen. I think that if Harold Lloyd's film were shown more often the public would respond very kindly. He would not be the forgotten genuis that he is. His work has remained just as fresh and exciting as that of Keaton and Chaplin. I really think people would appreciate these comedies if they were easier to get a hold of. If anyone gets the chance to see this film or any Harold Lloyd comedy, please don't pass up the opportunity. It really is priceless comedy. Bottom-line: Harold Lloyd's best film. This review refers to the Special Edition DVD(WB)......New York free-lance jouranlist John Kelso(John Cusak) is in Savannah to cover an the elite annual Christmas party thrown by the nouveau-riche John Williams(Kevin Spacey).John is in awe of the splendor,the charms,the opulence, and history of his surroundings. The party takes place in the Mercer House, built by the grandfather of Johnny Mercer.John meets some very colorful characters at the party. They all seem to be living in another world, one that is decadent and oblivious to the rest of the world. John is about to wrap his little essay for "Better Homes and Gardens" magazine, but when the evening ends with a mysterius murder, he stays on and become embroiled in the odd trial that follows.John decides to do a little investigating on his own, as he plans to write a book about the whole sordid affair. Jim Williams is the one on trial for the murder of a belligerent employee(Jude Law). Was he merely an employee though? What was the relationship of these two? During his investigating John encounters an eccentric array of characters, who all become important in some way to the trial. You'll meet Minerva, the voo-doo lady,who uses charms and spells to help Jim, "The Lady Chablis", a transexual who brings her own special charms to the story, and some of the jury members are pretty out there as well.John becomes one with this community as he must do whatever it takes to get this story. So meet him at the cemetary....at Midnight..in the Garden of Good and Evil!Clint Eastwood directs this intriguing story that was based on John Brendt's book of the same name.(Which was based on actual events). Eastwood mixes the mysteriousness of these events, with the wonderful surroundings of Savannah, and adds the music of Johnny Mercer to bring us a rare gem. A film that will have you totally involved with all the characters. The cast also includes, Allison Eastwood, Geoffrey Lewis and Jack Thompson. "The Lady Chablis" plays "The Lady Chablis"! And..Uga V the Georgia bulldog actually plays his father Uga IV and does a darn good job!The soundtrack is fabulous, mostly Mercer songs, and the cinematogrpahy is beautiful.Eastwood once again displays his behind the camera talents.The DVD is a great transfer. The picture is crystal clear and colors outstanding even in the nighttime scenes. The surround sound in the Dolby Digital 5.1 is very good. It is presented in widescreen, which enhances all the wonderful scenery of Savannah. Special Features include interviews, production notes,and a theatrical trailer. Shrek [VHS] Review

First, there's the Shrek film, which is not only an Academy Award winning Animated film...It's one of the best Films I've ever seen. I HIGHLY recommend that you buy the ASIN=B00003CXXJ version of Shrek which is both Widescreen and Fullscreen DVD, with great extras. The Shrek in this DVD pack is just Full Screen, which is an insult to this amazing film.Then, there's Shrek 3-D, which is a great "4-D" theme park attraction at Universal Studios. It looses some of it's funniness going from 4-D to 3-D...so see it at the theme park, in all it's glory. Here, it is only presented in Anaglyph (Latin for "annoying"). The 15 minute short is presented in 2 formats, 2-D (why?!?) and Anaglyph (Red/Cyan glasses). Very bad move not to have included a Field Sequential 3-D version, which is what all the 3-D film lovers were readying their wallets for. Anaglyph looks like bad 3-D on all TVs, while Field Sequential looks great, but only works some TVs. Including both would've sold very well.
Lastly...there's NO "Making Of Shrek 3-D" on the 3-D DVD...just 2 versions of a 15 minute short, and an interesting ad/trailer for Shrek 2.Skip this 2 pack. Buy the Widescreen DVD of Shrek. If the like a movie with Twists and Treachery, Deception and Double Crosses, then "Circus" should be Right up your Alley.John Hannah and Famke Janssen star as a Husband and Wife in Debt up to their Criminal Eyeballs. Their plans to become Debt Free, Decent Citizens are Marred by a Bunch of Shady Characters, including Peter Stormare as a Computer Hacker / Blackmailer, Fred Ward as a Bank Robber / Hit man, Brian Conley as a Casino Owner / Mob Boss, Tiny Lister Jr as a Henchman and Eddie Izzard as a Loanshark.The Performances are Great all round, not One Actor Hogs the Screen or Bogs its down, but no one really Stands out neither. If I had to pick one performance that I liked best, I'd have to choose between Izzard and Conley. They both play their Tough guy Thug roles to a Tea. (excuse the lame "tea" pun)"Circus" has been promoted as another "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" Rip-off, but that is Misleading. It rarely shoots for Comedy, but when it Does, it hits the mark. It is Darker, more Mature, more Americanised and it has a more "Film Noir" feel.Some may feel that the film gets Buried under a pile of Illogical Twists, and Dim-Witted Double crosses. Many Critics have said that, but I disagree. If you get into the story, and keep track of whose who, you'll most likely Enjoy yourself. I'll leave it to others to comment on the film itself, but I do want to warn potential purchasers that the DVD transfer leaves a lot to be desired. The original film is 2.35:1; the DVD is 16:9 letter boxed (not anamorphic)so about a third of the film is missing and it is clearly obvious in quite a few scenes. The quality of the transfer itself, while not awful, is not particularly good either.

I finally broke down and rented "The Dish," a true story about the small group of men working at a satellite dish in a remote section of Australia who, in July 1969, played a major part in helping to transmit the first live images of a man walking on the moon.I'm happy to report that "The Dish" turns out to be a world-class charmer, a delightful film that captures the high-spirited innocence and optimism of the space race era and vividly recreates a time when people from all over the world could do little but stare in spellbound amazement at the achievements of which mankind proved itself capable - and feel the mutual pride and camaraderie that such events occasioned. The makers of "The Dish" dramatize this feeling of universal connectedness by showing how even the most remote, seemingly "insignificant" people could be made to feel a part of an event happening half a world away and commanding the attention of most of the planet's inhabitants. Here near the small town of Parkes, Australia, nestled in what is little more than a sheep pasture, looms the 1,000-ton satellite dish that will serve as the eye of the world for this event of monumental historic importance. The makers of the film have chosen to take a charming, low-key approach to the material, focusing on the likable, decidedly offbeat people who make up both the team at the dish as well as the citizenry of the nearby town. With the subtle quirkiness common to most Australian comedies, "The Dish" displays a real affection for its characters, showing them as flawed human beings who, nevertheless, learn to accept and cope with the differences that might otherwise separate them. Thus, even the simmering conflict between the American hotshot from NASA assigned to the dish and one of the more sensitive Aussie specialists plays itself out in a believable and touching way. Other characters defy the stereotypes that less gifted filmmakers might have enforced upon them. The mayor of the town, for instance, rather than being a self-congratulatory blowhard (as we fear he will become in the early parts of the film) turns out to be a sweet, gentle, family-loving man who is as overwhelmed by the world's spotlight being shone on his community as are the common folk who make up his constituents. Lending his star quality to the proceedings, Sam Neil gives a beautifully understated performance as Cliff Buxton, a recently widowed technician at the dish who manages to take all this hubbub in stride but who conveys, in gentle ways, the sheer awesomeness of the event in which he finds himself taking part. In fact, it is this sense of ordinary people suddenly finding themselves a part of history that makes "The Dish" more than simply a clever, likable comedy. We find ourselves genuinely touched and moved by much of what we see on screen. Perhaps, after the tragedy of the World Trade Center attacks - during which people all over the world sat riveted in morbid fascination to their television sets watching that horrifying event unfold - the film attains an added poignancy. It reminds us a bit of our lost innocence as we see the people in this film staring spellbound at their television sets 32 years earlier for a far different purpose - to witness, as a united, worldwide community, the GOOD things mankind can do when he puts his mind to it rather than the evil. By dealing so warmly and gently with the people who make up this little corner of the world, "The Dish" lifts the spirits and renews the faith. ...
