Cold Mountain [VHS] Review

"Cold Mountains", one of the best films of the year (it's a crime it wasn't nominated for Best Picture), is beautifully crafted, stirring, poetic tale of love, loss, and the will to survive. Directed and adapted to the screen by the wonderful Anthony Minghella and boasting a stunning cast of Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Jack White, Brendan Gleeson, and Donald Sutherland, this film is truly a force to be reckoned with."Cold Mountain" tells the story of Inman (Law), a carpenter working in Cold Mountain, North Carolina in 1861 when the alluring, elegant, and well-educated Ada (Kidman) and her father, Reverend Monroe (Sutherland), move to the Blue Mountains from the city. Inman and Ada, in true Hollywood fashion, are instantly taken by each other and engage in restrained flirtation, Ada's preacher father and their different social classes being the bulwark from romance. Soon the Civil War begins and the entire young male population of Cold Mountain departs in eager anticipation of glorious battle. Inman and Ada engage in one fleeting, hungry kiss before he rushes off to join the departing procession.During battle, Inman is wounded and, after reading Ada's numerous earnest letters imploring him to return to her, deserts the Confederate army and embarks upon an Odyssey-like journey back home to his true love. Meanwhile, Ada's father has died, leaving her helpless and alone on their 300 acre farm. Soon Ruby (Zellweger) arrives and offers Ada her services in exchange for food and shelter. Realizing that she simply cannot manage on her own, Ada agrees. The rest of this spellbinding film flashes back and forth between Ada, being "all that keeps Inman from sliding into some dark place" and Inman, being Ada's "last thread of courage". Though these two souls barely know each other, they both remarkably become the single thing in each others world worth living for, worth fighting for. When boiled down to it, "Cold Mountain" is simply a beautiful testament of the human soul's fierce will to survive and, as corny as it sounds, the power of love. If it weren't for their love, neither Ada nor Inman would have found the will and courage to survive after their lives had been shattered by the brutalities of war.The seamlessly intertwined music plays such a large emotional role in this film. From Gabriel Yard's haunting score to Alison Krauss' tender songs, the music in this films helps to create an absorbing atmosphere that sucks you right into the Civil War. In addition, John Seale's breathtaking cinematography complete with sweeping views of the snow-encrusted Blue Mountains makes this a film you simply must see on the big screen. This has been a very difficult review for me to write. Upon first seeing "Cold Mountain", I was pleased with the film, but definitely not as taken with it as I soon came to be. That all changed in the weeks following. I simply cannot get this film out of my head. The hope, the sacrifices, the pain, the loss, the love. It really sticks with you. It's hard to put my feelings into words and I sincerely hope that this review has given you the incentive to go see this film, and by doing so, embark upon an unforgettable journey. The Airzone Solution [VHS] Review

Four former Doctor Whos are reunited, so that in itself is a treat. The four are Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy, a.k.a. Doctors 3, 5, 6, and 7. Two other Who alumni who appear are Nicola Bryant, who played Peri, the Sixth Doctor's assistant, but here, is Baker's co-worker and love interest, and Michael Wisher, best known for providing Dalek voices as well as playing Davros in "Genesis Of The Daleks" and appearing in "Terror Of The Autons," "Carnival Of Monsters," and "Planet Of Evil." Wisher plays the Secretary of State for the Environment here. The story is about investigative reporter Al Dunbar (Davison), who's latest target is the Airzone Corporation, an organization who has been hired by the government to clean up the air. His mentor Oliver Trethewey, is mildly impressed with the video expos that opens the program, and urges him to press even further. With the aid of his eco-nutter activist collaborator, Anthony Stanwick, Dunbar hacks into Airzone's central computer with a disk given to him by his lover, an Airzone employee, who is later discovered and subjected to the Airzone Solution. Breaking into the central computer of the facility, Dunbar discovers a horrifying secret, at which point, he is detected by the alarm system. Before he can escape, he is captured and later found dead.Weatherman Arnie Davis (Baker), whose concern for pollution is limited to his cheery weather reports replete with clowning around, suddenly sees Dunbar dying and collapses during one of his reports. Dunbar's reappearance begins to affect his job and personal life with Elenya Brown(Nicola Bryant). He does some digging around of his own, and becomes involved, placing his job in jeopardy. He unwillingly teams up with Stanwick, who doesn't seem to care too much for him, and with help from Ellie, tries to pick up the pieces where Dunbar left off.Jon Pertwee (Oliver Trethewey), doesn't have much screen time, but appears as a somewhat omniscient presence looking out for Davis and McCoy.Colin Baker as Arnie Davis puts in another solid role as someone who is trying to cope with the change in circumstance fate has thrown at him, and the birth of his conscience.Sylvester McCoy plays Stanwick more irascibly than he did as the Doctor. He's clearly scornful of Davis but is forced to become a reluctant ally in order to get to the truth behind Airzone. The story is compact, leaving not much room for character development, but that can be excused by Bill Bagg's budget of an fifty-minutes to an hour for its programs. Set in the near future, Airzone presents a grim picture of a world where people need to be protected from the toxic air by umbrellas and oxy-masks. Is this what we are heading toward, or is Kyoto merely the first step to prevent a scenario in Airzone from happening? I only hope it's not too late. In the end, the real Airzone Solution is a typical example of building a better mouse, not a better mousetrap. I leave that for the viewer to discover. The speech given by Airzone's CEO, Rachel Lonsdale, is not complete without merit. It is true, after having developed so much technologically, we cannot go back. Progress is the way forward, but progress can mean... what? Well, definitely not the progress Airzone had in mind. Heather Barker plays Lonsdale as the archetypal capitalist with ice in her veins.Alan Cumming (Eyes Wide Shut, Spiceworld, Titus) plays McNamara, who appears to have a secret agenda of his own.The show does leave one wondering if people like Rachel Carson became who they were by having the Earth fight against the pollution rained upon it by the human virus by converting certain people to fight for it. It seems to be the case with Al Dunbar, and later, with Arnie Davis. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkComment Comment

Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star [VHS] Review

I first saw this in the theater. Honestly, I had absolutely no intention of seeing this movie, but it was important to a friend of mine and somehow she convinced me to go with her. I like comedies, but I don't like things that are slap-stickish or that are geared solely for the pleasure of 12 year old boys.

I was pleasantly surprised with Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star. This movie was incredibly funny and I loved watching Barry Williams, Leif Garrett, Corey Feldman, Danny Bonaducci, and Screech playing poker. Every game they play, Barry raises the stakes by adding souveniers from the Brady Bunch episodes telling them they can easily make money on ebay.

The movie is slightly absurd but it is hilarious. For me, it is funny because there honestly are people who think and act like Dickie does. They got so into the idea of fame that they would do absolutely anything to "make a comeback" even ride around in a baby stroller and go "ga-ga goo-goo".

I also enjoyed the children in the movie. They are so smart and witty and really hold their own against Dickie. They open up a whole world to him that he's never experienced before: a normal childhood. In the beginning, they hate him and make fun of him, but as they get to know eachother, the children learn from Dickie how to be self-confident and Dickie learns the value of love.

While some of the jokes are crude, they work for David Spade in a way that another actor would find it hard to get away with. David is able to combine a childlike wonder and innocence with vulgarity in such a way that you never completely dislike Dickie. There is enough hope and sincerity that you find yourself pushing for him even though he goes over the top to get what he wants.

Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star is also filled with wonderful oddities like a celebrity wrestling match between David Spade and Emmanuel Lewis (of Webster fame), visits to AA and Lamaze, the Barry Williams poker games, and a witty song at the end featuring various child-stars from the 70's and 80's.

Quite enjoyable!

Police [VHS] Review

It's nice to see Depardieu in this kind of role. He struggles between his police ethics and his passion for a drug dealer, played by Sophie Marceau, lovely as usual, but dangerous...? He combines several characters in one, making his personality in the movie very complex. He's obviously a great actor, and he proves it once again in this film. I was not familiar with Maurice Pialat's work, and was very nicely surprised. I liked this one very much. Worth a try if you like French Cinema.

Runaway Jury [VHS] Review

The plot goes round and round in "Runaway Jury" and the camera is in lockstep, swirling around its actors as if they stood at the pivot of a merry-go-round, dizzying the audience into a headache of chaos, the better to distract them from a movie that makes no sense at all. That said, the story is so thorough in its cynic fantasy it is (like, say, "Cruel Intentions") pretty entertaining.Gene Hackman, who at 73 never slows down, is sternly malevolent as Rankin Fitch, a high-priced jury consultant whose arsenal of espionage tools and recon foot soldiers rivals the KGB. The "war room" scene where he breaks down his potential pawns is informative; though nobody is going to spend $15 million to select 12 people - as movie contends - there is an art to it, and the technique is laid out far better here than it was in "Devil's Advocate." Fitch assists a New Orleans gun manufacturer caught in a class action lawsuit only plausible in movies, and one of the jurors, Nick Easter (John Cusack), and his girlfriend, Marlee (Rachel Weisz), are blackmailing both the defendant and the plaintiff, represented by Wendall Rohr (Dustin Hoffman). Nick and Marlee claim they can sway the jury and sell the verdict to the highest bidder. As the plot unfurls it becomes possible that they aren't trying to buy anything, but play a con, backed by a Moral. That's a sweet proletariat consideration, but in terms of doing justice, it's robbing Peter to pay Paul.Director Gary Fleder ("Don't Say A Word") is far more devoted to winding us up than meditating on the legal system; with cinematographer Robert Elswit, Fleder jerks and spins and speeds and slows and generally makes a drama soup out of things; New Orleans, one of the truly original cities, is merely background. Stuffed to the brim with action, "Runaway Jury" is economical and workmanlike, like Grisham's thrillers, and a strong vehicle for performers. Hackman, borrowing from his magnificent work in "The Royal Tanenbaums" is a fine rascal, and Cusack hasn't been this shifty since "The Grifters." The surprise? It's Weisz, as the feisty brains of the operation. She holds her own with Hackman, which is more than can be said for a broken-down, weathered Hoffman. The Brink's Job [VHS] Review

The Brink's Job movie is about the 1950 Brink's robbery in Boston. Peter Falk, Peter Boyle, and Paul Sorvino (yes, Paul Sorvino, MANY years before Goodfellas), are three of the low level crooks who mastermind the robbery of a Brink's location in Boston. Brinks Job is funny and entertaining, and at times it is edge-of-your-seat exciting. There is great dialogue throughout, especially from Peter Falk's character, Tony Pino. There are superb supporting performances throughout. The plot moves in a great rhythm; it held my interest from start to finish. The movie really had the flavor of Boston, too.I am a fan of many of the actors in this, such as Gena Rowlands, also wonderful as Tony Pino's wife. Sheldon Leonard turns in a good performance in a smaller role as J. Edgar Hoover. After I watched the film, I read that Brink's Job was directed by William Friedkin, director of French Connection and The Exorcist, two more great movies of that era. It's no surprise that Brink's Job turned out so well.If you like crime caper movies, you ought to take a look at Brink's Job.ken32 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkComment Comment (1)
