The Postman [VHS] Review

I believe that the reviewers must have been reading each other's reviews instead of actually watching the movie, and Costner-bashing has long been great sport among reviewers. The original David Brin novel has been improved upon in several ways. In particular, gone are the two cyborg/supermen who duked it out in the finale of the novel, a distraction and deus-ex-machina. I especially loved the internal consistency, lack of impossible battles, and the strong development of a number of believable characters. The Holnist leader (who played a supporting role in "Armageddon") is more than a cartoon bad guy, and Costner's postman is plagued by guilt and doubt as he discovers how seriously everyone takes his "Restored United States". There is almost nothing in the movie that is irrelevant to the plot.Yes, it is a bit slow in parts, and I was ready to quit watching after 30 minutes because I had heard that it was just another post-apocalyptic bore, but it turned into a sterling movie. Even my wife, no fan of that genre, wanted to watch it all the way through. "The Abyss" is one of the most intriguing Sci-Fi/action movies to have ever been made. From the very beginning of this exceptional movie to the end, for the first time viewer or for those that have watched it many times, it is a highly inventive and an ultimately captivating movie. Although there have been many movies made about events under the surface of the ocean, few can match up to the intensity that "The Abyss" is laden with.One of the more intriguing aspects about the edition of "The Abyss" that I'm reviewing today or any other version that contains both the original theatrical release and the Special Edition with twenty eight minutes of additional footage is how the whole tone of the conclusion of the film changes between the two. This is not something that I wish to go in to in great detail; suffice it to say that the Special Edition gives a whole new meaning to this classic movie.From Ed Harris to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio to Michael Biehn and all of the other marvelous actors that performed in this film, they all deserve high praise for their collective efforts in creating this Science Fiction classic. It isn't too often that Ed Harris or Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio gets the lead roles in films but in the case of "The Abyss," they both proved that they were quite ready for such roles.In 1984 first time director, James Cameron gave millions of movies fans just the first taste of his directing talents when he burst on the scene with "The Terminator" which started a run of extraordinarily successful movies culminating in "Titanic" which is one of the highest grossing films of all times. "The Abyss" was the third in this run of incredible movies and arguably the most intriguing of them all as the script, while being science fiction and adventure is "that much more" inventive than the rest of those films. In addition to James Cameron's exceptional talents on this film, the musical score by Alan Silvestri makes "The Abyss" that much better, greatly enhancing every scene!The Premise:Welcome to what appears to be the mid eighties or early nineties and we have an American nuclear submarine that is patrolling an abysmal trench in the Atlantic. Their tracking something that is going faster than anything they've ever seen before and suddenly they lose all power as the "thing" goes by; a minute or so later, all power is restored but it's too late, they slam right into the abysmal wall and the ship goes down, fortunately for them, they get a beacon off before the bridge is consumed by water... Some twenty odd miles away is a deep sea oil rig operation with a control ship on the surface and an underwater station at about fifteen hundred feet below the surface. The US Navy comes in and wishes to send a SEAL team down and use the station and the crew to find the sub...What follows from there is one of the most intriguing, captivating and enthralling Science Fiction films ever made that only gets better every time you see it and if you've never watched it before, you will most certainly be blown away by what director James Cameron created in this film!I highly recommend this film to any and all who are fans of Science Fiction or fans of very good dramatic films with a "splash" of Sci-Fi in them. ___noise___ 1000Special Features:-Theatrical Version

Small Time Crooks Review

This movie is downright silly, and I loved every second of it! It's good to see Woody Allen writing, directing, and acting in a comedy movie. So much has been made about this man's personal life that people forget his professional talents.Woody Allen and Tracy Ullman play a husband and wife in the style of Fred & Ethel Mertz of "I Love Lucy". They constantly bicker at each other, but it still remains an obviously loving relationship. As the movie begins, Allen's character, Ray, is an ex-con who works as a dish washer, and Ullman plays his manicurist wife, Frenchy. They have exactly $6,000 between them, and they've decided to pool their money with other partners in order to execute a plan to rob a bank. They rent a storefront that neighbors the bank and plan on digging a tunnel from the store to inside the bank's vault. The storefront is turned into a cookie shop as a cover for their operation. The bank robbery idea goes sour, but ironically, the cookie shop flourishes, and the next thing you know, Ray and Frenchy are heading up their own giant cookie corporation. Frenchy decides that she'd like to join the ranks of the classy elite, so she buddies with an art dealer (played by Hugh Grant) and asks him to teach her how to live a lifestyle of affluence. Ray wants no part of this lifestyle, and his relationship with Frenchy begins to suffer. By the end of the movie, their cookie empire crumbles and Frenchy finds out that the art dealer is using her for her money, so Ray and Frenchy must come together again to salvage some money and escape to Florida.All of this seems like alot to cram into a movie that's only 95 minutes long, but it all happens very fast, and in a very comical way. Woody Allen and Tracy Ullman are great in their roles, and the supporting cast complements them very nicely. This movie is a definite must-see. Passion for Life [VHS] Review

This is a must see for anyone in the education field. Although it is 50 years old, it was way ahead of it's time. It is a story about a teacher who is hired to teach young boys in France right after the end of the war. His teaching styles are progressive and quite different than the "arms folded-memorizing facts" method. The boys learn by doing, creating their own printing press, building a water mill, and interviewing townspeople about their work. The best part is the way the teacher "reaches out" to a paticular boy who is troubled... Any teacher, or parent, can relate.

Forever Young [VHS] Review

One has to give superstar Mel Gibson a lot of credit. Over his prolific career, Gibson has taken many risks in the roles he's chosen, and this romantic fantasy is just one of them. FOREVER YOUNG opens in 1939, where daredevil test pilot Gibson finds himself involved with a scientist who is perfecting a cryogenics chamber. He's also madly in love with the lovely Helen (Isabel Glasser), and wants to marry her. Alas and alack, before he can pop the question, Helen is struck down by a truck and goes into a coma. As the months go by, Gibson clings to hopes she'll recover but as his scientist friend (George Wendt) states, doctors give her little hope. When Mel feels he can't watch Helen die, he volunteers to be the first human volunteer for the cryogenics project, asking Wendt to freeze him for a year so he can avoid the inevitable. Next thing you know, it's 1992, and we meet single mom Jamie Lee Curtis (quite good as always) and her 10 year old son (Elijah Wood, simply charming, showing us what his future would be years later). While playing in an abandoned military warehouse, Wood and his buddy stumble upon the cyrogenics chamber and accidentally release Gibson. How he got caught in this chamber for 53 years forms the core of the story and Gibson desperately searches for some knowledge of Wendt's whereabouts.

The movie is unabashedly romantic but Gibson is so good and the story takes hold of you and you watch with amusement as Gibson discovers the technologies of a new world and his scenes with young Wood are marvelous. A rather contrived ending spoils the overall effect but FOREVER YOUNG is nonetheless a very engaging film.

Music Box [VHS] Review

What if your Dad, the loving and beloved head of your middle-class American family, was suddenly charged with war crimes? This is the scenario for THE MUSIC BOX, a 1990 release, in which Jessica Lange plays a criminal defense lawyer asked by her widower father to defend him against such charges being brought by the US government on behalf of Hungary. The father, played by Armin Mueller-Stahl, is alleged to have committed multiple atrocities as an officer of a neo-Nazi police unit in Budapest during World War II. A complicating element is the father's vocal anti-communism, for which, he claims, the Red regime back in the old country is masterminding a frame-up. (Remember, we're talking about bad ol' days of the Cold War here.) Anyway, the Old Man needs a hotshot attorney, so his dutiful and devoted daughter takes the case.

Another reviewer has concluded that the plot is "far-fetched". Hmm. I would think that those aging American residents who've actually been charged with Nazi war crimes during the past couple of decades might not find it so far-fetched at all. Some have even been deported. Perhaps he's referring to the storyline that calls for the accused to be defended by his own offspring. OK, that probably wouldn't happen in real life. But, what is an otherwise idle Hollywood screenwriter to do when called upon to help fabricate a box office success?

The plot's arguable implausibility aside, both Lange and Mueller-Stahl give forceful and bravura performances as two people caught up in the fading echoes of receding history. The final scene between the two should have earned Lange that year's Oscar, but sadly didn't. There're also some quite good visual images of Budapest, which, at the end of the Cold War when this film was shot, was probably the Eastern Bloc's most beautiful capital city.

Notwithstanding that I've always been a little in love with Jessica Lange ever since TOOTSIE, I liked this film a lot. "They" say you can't go back. But, sometimes past history comes to visit uninvited.
