Chances Are [VHS] Review

Chances Are portrays the power of love and understanding in a comedic way. If you love good old sentimental movies with a splash of comedy, as well as a great soundtrack, check out Chances Are! Soundtrack includes Cher and Peter Cetera singing that popular and beautiful song After All, as well as Johnny Mathis' Chances Are and Rod Stewart's Forever Young.

The Black Velvet Gown [VHS] Review

This international award winning adaptation of Catherine Cookson's best selling book of the same name should delight Ms. Cookson's devoted fans and anyone else who enjoys period pieces in which class conflicts are the central theme.Set in England in the 1840s, a desperate widow with three children, two boys and a girl, takes the post of housekeeper to a crusty member of the gentry who lives in solitary shabby splendor in a home that has seen better days. Living in genteel poverty, he is intrigued by the fact that his housekeeper and her children are literate. Moved by this family who has infused some interest into his formerly desiccated life, he decides to dedicate some personal effort to educating the children. Unfortunately, he has a dark side that causes a rift in the family he seems to have adopted as his own. Alienated from the oldest son who has little interest in learning, he continues to teach the other two children. The daughter, in particular, thirsts for knowledge and she takes to his tutoring as a duck takes to water. Consequently, she develops a deep affection for him, which he reciprocates. When he dies, he leaves her with an appreciation for education and books. After his death, however, her mother, angered by the terms of her late employer's will, forces her daughter to go into service as a laundress in a wealthy household in order to earn an income. There, the daughter's intelligence, literacy, and education causes endless trouble, both upstairs and downstairs, and class conflicts begin to raise their ugly head. When certain events transpire in the household that cause her to escape her drudgery, her life takes an unexpected turn, and the world soon becomes her oyster. This is a handsome production with wonderful performances by the entire cast. It is sure to delight those who enjoy period pieces, as well as those who enjoy the novels of the late Catherine Cookson. Meridian: Kiss of the Beast Review

This movie is full of suspense, light erotica, rommance, great acting, backrounds and photography. I would highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys fantasy horror. It's only drawback is that it is not available in DVD form.

In This World Review

The cinematography of this film is sparse and naked, the pacing as if you are following the tale of lives, the acting like there is no acting at all, and the subject matter relevant. If you need edited and spliced quick action pacing and effects, go elsewhere. If you care about the broadening of horizons and want to learn more about the experience of a middle-east refugee, watch this film.

Michael Winterbottom, the director of In This World, make some important choices. One, his casting of actual refugees instead of professional actors, lend great authenticity to the story. My favorite aspect of the movie is the location shooting in places rarely viewed by a Western audience. The tale starts in a border refugee camp between Afghanistan and Pakistan outside of Peshawar. A youth, brave and wise beyond his years, and an older relative take off on a journey to the promised land of London. On the way they go through Quetta, Qom, Teheran, Turkey, Belgium, and eventually on to London. The journey is grueling and harrowing and makes the refugee camp look like another form of paradise.

The pacing may be slow and there is a lot of silence in the movie but the sense of travel, trust and deserved mistrust stays with you. People put their lives in the hands of human traffickers all for the dream of something better...if they survive to reach something better.

If you care about international issues of refugees and their plight, you will be rewarded by this film. If you are interested in some of the dynamics between Afghanistan and Pakistan, you will be glad you took this one in. If you only tend towards mainstream flicks and have a need to be entertained, well look elsewhere.

Kim [VHS] Review

Though less known than the 1950 Errol Flynn version, this made-for-TV adaptation of the famous Kipling story is in fact a pretty good one, being faithful to the book in spirit and in story. The main episodes of the original are not changed much, and still the film manages to realize the world of Kiping's India, where some adventure is waiting for you around the corner.Kim, or Kimball O'Hara is the orphaned son of an Irish soldier in India, and Kim spends his time as vagabond in Lahore, where he climbs upon the big cannon of the town. From this famous opening, in which he is taken up as a guide by a travelling Tibetan lama (Peter O'Tool, in bald-head wig), the film follows the boy's adventures in the country, meeting colorful characters, the best of whom are the dashing Muhbub Ali (Bryan Brown) and suave agent Babu (John Rhys-Davies).Assisting the jourey of the lama who tries to find out "The River of the Arrow," Kim also learns the life of the people in India through the mission given to him from the higher officers. The episodic story of Kipling remains basically the same, and you will find the major episodes from the book, such as the two Russians from the north. The greatest thing about this "Kim" is its location. As it is shot in India, the picture can really show the hot and humid climate of the place (the Planes), or the cold and chilling air of the mountains (the Hills). You will understand why the lama could regain his health after going back to the mountains if you see the film, for you can feel the great contrast between the two places. The original Kim is slightly enigmatic boy (or a teen?), whose growth is implied between the lines. The Kim here played by an Indian young actor is fairly good though the fact remains that he is virtually an amateur. Still, he looks great, and the supports are effective, especailly Brown as the horse-riding, menaceful (but somehow humourous) Ali. As to Peter O'Toole, at first you might find him miscast, but I think no one can really play the role of the lama exactly as the book shows. This newer "Kim" is slightly overlong, but its faithful adaptation with realistic Indian background is certainly worth your money, especially when you find the original book charming. EastEnders: Happy 15th Birthday [VHS] Review

It is my hope that this sampler gives viewers who've never been fortunate enough to catch this series here in the States a glimpse of this show & it's fine quality of drama.

EastEnders is a drama centering on the daily lives of working class Londoners along London's East Side. The core families are The Mitchells, The Fowlers & The Slaters. I find this a highly-addictive show.

Some true fans of British television would find this entertaining & engrossing. It was previously shown on BBC America i've heard, but as it was put on at a 1pm time slot, it never stood a fair chance to gain a larger audience here in the US. A shame really, because it deserves to be shown in all of it's splendor. It gained a cult following during it's screenings here. So much so that true, loyal fans who had followed it from BBCA had even boycotted the channel in protest of it's decision to cancel EastEnders from it's line-up.

I will buy whatever EastEnders that comes out. I hope the DVD release in the USA generates a renewed interest & that the series is picked up again in this country.

I believe the DVDs would sell fairly well & rake in great DVD sales. Decide for yourself!

Luckily I can follow the series with continuity as a friend in the UK tapes the show for me.

I would absolutely recommend this DVD! Buy it & enjoy it!!
