Ghostbusters 2 [VHS] Review

I received the DVD a few days earlier than expected, and in an unexpected way.

There was a knock on the door, it was maybe 2 in the morning. I don't really remember. I slowly got out of bed and peeked through the doorhole to see who it could possibly be.

It was Bill effing Murray. Dressed up as a ghostbuster. When I opened the door, he clicked a remote to turn on a stereo boombox he had with him. Ghostbusters theme blaring, he starts dancing. 70's disco style.

After "WHO YOU GONNA CALL," he held the DVD case up to my face and paused the song. I was silent, he lowered the case and put it in my face again.

"Ghostbusters?" I asked.

He started the music again, put the dvd down on my doormat, took the boombox and danced away.

I opened up the DVD case when I got back inside, and on the INSIDE of the SHRINK WRAPPED DVD CASE, I kid you not there was a note that read

"No one will ever believe you. No one buys DVDs anymore."

I got noise complaints from other people in the apartment the next day. I told them I was sorry and wouldn't play my music so loud. Let's face it. No one would believe otherwise.

Excellent DVD. High quality video and audio, and the extras are AWESOME.

Life: A User's Manual Review

If you just read a thumb nail sketch of this movie, it sounds like another in a long line of (take your pick) lightweight romantic comedies/fish-out-of-water/road movies. And it's true, there's nothing terribly ground breaking in terms of plot here. Nevertheless, it's worth your time. Some of the things that make "Jump Tomorrow" special are as follows:*the whimsical spirit of the screen play;
*the capricious joy with which the actors play their parts;
*vibrantly colored sets and cinematography; and
*director Joel Hopkins, who keeps this movie from taking itself too seriously.The casting and performances in this movie deserve special mention. Hipployte Girardot turns in an amusing performance as Gerard, frenetic friend of George, the film's protagonist. Natalia Verbeke (the next Penelope Cruz?) is alluring and sweet as George's friend and love interest. But my personal favorite is Tunde Adebimpe as George. He plays the part with such hangdog sincerity, I couldn't help feeling exactly what he feels. The word "chemistry" is overused, but these three definitely have it. They play their parts so naturally, I forgot I was watching a movie. There is zero sense of "star-struck Hollywood" in this film. (Perhaps that stands to reason, since it's an in indie movie.)By the way, when was the last time you saw a movie where the three main characters were Latina, French, and African American? Kudos to the director for: 1)assembling this racially diverse cast; ans 2)doing it in a way that isn't overly self-aware, or laden with attitude.Note to parents: "Jump Tomorrow" is rated PG. Compared to much of what's out there, it's quite wholesome and free of offensive language. It would be a good choice for your next family video night.I saw "Jump Tomorrow" in Seattle in July, 2001 during its (extremely short) theatrical run. On that same day, I saw "Ghost World" (which I also loved, but for different reasons). I just couldn't get either film out of my mind; I thought for sure they would both go on to become art house hits. We all know the success that "Ghost World" went on to achieve, but "Jump Tomorrow" somehow slipped through the cracks. Ever since then, I've been hoping against hope that "Jump Tomorrow" would see a release on video. Now, here's your chance to see what you've been missing!! This review refers to DVD Complete Set(BBC/BFS Video) of "The Six Wives of Henry VIII"(3 discs).....

This classic BBC television series from 1970 is an outstanding production of 6 plays, all by different authors, depiciting the relationship Henry VIII had with each of his 6 wives.It's an entertaining and enlighting look at the monarch, played exquisitely from his youth to his sickly old age by Keith Michell.The six very different women, most of whom meet with a tragic ending are also portrayed brillantly by the actresses and will draw you into their joys and fears at being the Queen of England.

Catherine of Aragon(Annette Crosbie), Ann Boleyn(Dorothy Tutin), Jane Seymour(Anne Stallybrass), Anne of Cleves(Elvi Hale),Catherine Howard(Anglea Pleasence) and Catherine Parr(Rosalie Crutchley),were all picked to serve a purpose for the Royal Court. Some served useful in forming political alliances, and some in gaining favors for social climbers in the court. But to Henry....They were there to provide him with sons..heirs to the throne..and God help them if they didn't.

The production is wonderful. The costumes, make up, each play beautifully written, and the majestic performances will have you enthralled with each story and hanging on every word.The authentic look at this Royal soap opera is one any student of European history, or anyone who loves stories about Kings and Queens would be thrilled with.It is a five star performance.

The DVD did not get the kingly treatment it deserved.Although there is nothing about it that will interfere with your enjoyment of this treasure, it is very dated. The costumes and magnificent jewelry need to be brightned up, the outdoor scenes are a bit grainy, and the sound(although clear and distinguishable) is a very low recording.The price is a little high considering what this could look and sound like on DVD with a restoration.So 4 stars for the package.

It is absolutly worth the view and worth owning though.Unless a new edition comes along(this edition was released July, 2000), I would suggest to check with the sellers here, the prices seem much more reasonable.(I got a great deal at about half the price).

You may lose your head over this one.....enjoy...Laurie

The Hanging Tree (Import PAL) [VHS] Review

This psychological Western ranks as high as "High Noon", if not a little higher. It is truly a sublime work of art. The script, based on Dorothy M. Johnson's novel, is intelligently written by Wendall Mayes (Anatomy of Murder) & Hallstead Welles. Much of the movie is filmed in the beautiful Ahtanum and Nile Valleys, Yakima, Washington and director Delmer Davis shows a good eye for action and bold vistas. Shot in Technicolor and superbly acted by Gary Cooper, Maria Schell, Karl Malden and Ben Piazza, the film is artistically and visually stunning! A haunting title song by Jerry Livingston (nominated for Oscar) and dramatic music score by Max Steiner (Sergeant York, The Fountainhead) complement the unforgettable story.

It is 1873, the Gold Trail, Montana. People from all walks of life are coming to small miners camp in hope to strike gold. Among them is Doctor Joe Frail. A complex man. A survivor of the ultimate betrayal that left him emotionally damaged. An excellent doctor, he heals everybody from just about everything, but is unable to mend his own broken heart. Instead, he resolves to never trust a woman again and changes his name from Temple to Frail. "It suits a man with frail hope"- he'd explain to a friend. Exceptionally kind, caring and compassionate, Joe Frail would do everything in his power to help his patients. And yet, he could be equally mean (but always fair) to his enemies and would lose his tamper quickly if somebody mentioned his past.

Doctor Frail saves the life of a young thief named Rune. Rune is desperate, homeless man, who would've been hanged or would've died from his wound if Doctor Frail did not operate on him. Rune can't pay the doctor for his professional service and so, he becomes his bond servant. It's not an easy relationship. Naturally, Rune is reserved and it will take him some time to realise that in fact, Frail has given him a home, a job and a purpose-a new lease of life.
A stagecoach is ambushed near town. All passengers are killed, only the driver and a young woman survive, but she gets lost in the wilderness. She is Elizabeth Mahler from Switzerland. The locals assemble a posse and after three days search they find her badly bruised, blinded, traumatized and semi-conscious. Doctor Frail decides to save her at all cost. He spends days and nights nursing her back to full health, aided only by Rune. Frail becomes her protector and later, a secret partner in her endeavors.
Tender love blossoms between Elizabeth and the doctor. Love that he longs for and would die for, but could not accept. There is only one cure for the damage caused by ultimate betrayal and that is ultimate sacrifice! Maria Schell is outstanding as the innocent young Elizabeth, who makes that ultimate sacrifice for the man she loves. Maria captured my heart with her natural beauty and her restrained and powerful performance.

Gary Cooper is tremendous as Doctor Frail. He was born to play that part, it suits his caring nature. As always, he gets gracefully under the skin of his character and they become one. In 1959 Coop won "Golden Laurel Top Action Performance" for this Oscar-worthy portrayal.
Karl Malden plays with chilling realism the local villain and attention-seeker Frenchy Plante. He was deservedly awarded 3rd place "Golden Laurel Top Male Supporting Performance".

Please, don't be put off by the title. There is a lot of humanity and wisdom in this story and many tender moments to savor. Without giving much away, I'd like mention a scene that involves a little girl suffering from malnutrition. Doctor Frail checks her thoroughly and tells her parents that she is malnourished. He realises that they are struggling financially and suggests they take his cow to fatten the child on some milk.

-"I can't pay for no cow"- says the embarrassed father.
-"I loan it to you" - replies the doctor.
-"How much we owe you?"- asks the mother.
Doctor Frail asks the little girl to give him a kiss and tells the parents that he's been paid.

There is drama, conflict, gunshots and a great fist-fight woven into the plot. All evolves to an explosive climax and leads to the most luminous and memorable finale of one of the greatest love stories ever told!

I do not understand why this magnificent film is neglected. It's a must see for any Gary Cooper, Maria Schell and Karl Malden admirer and for the fans of fine art in general. Thankfully, it is obtainable on DVD from Amazon.fr (France) or Amazon.de (Germany). Both sites have help pages in English with very good guidance of how to order, pay, return an item e.t.c. To get the help page you click on "Aide" (top right corner) for Amazon.fr, and on "Hilfe" for Amazon.de(top right corner). Also, you can email them in English and they will reply promptly and are happy to help. Both French and German editions have the original audio in English and the print is pristine. The only inconvenience is that the DVD is region 2 and you will need multi-region player, but the film is worth it. It must not be forgotten and it is in our power to prevent this happening. May be someday we will see region 1 edition with some extras- the kind of treatment "The Hanging Tree" deserves. I wish so and I hope so.

And God Created Woman Review

AND GOD CREATED WOMAN is a remake of the classic Bridgett Bardot film but in title only. The movie is pretty predictable, so it is only saved by just having Rebecca De Mornay heating up the screen. There is a hilarious chain of events near the beginning of the film. She escapes from a women's prison, hitchhikes a ride (from a man played by Frank Langella in the car), and the vehicle ends up at the prison she's escaped from. So, she has to sneak back into prison without being noticed. A contractor (Vincent Spano) helps her out while he's working on some construction in the prison gymnasium...The rest of the plot is not very memorable as she tries to start her own rock band when she's paroled and must sacrifice integrity and her marriage to get to the top etc. Overall, a movie that was made to showcase the "talents" of Ms. DeMornay and nothing else.

I thought about ordering this DVD set for some time but had held off. I thought it was rather pricey. Along came by birthday, though, and I decided to buy myself a little something....I forgot how good this show really was. It was incredibly loyal to the each of the characters and everything at this point. The voice actors are an all star cast as well. The remastering job was very good when you consider what they had to work with to start. They cleaned up a lot of noise and dirt off of the film and made the colors a lot more vivid and clear. There are some occasional sound effects added, but they are not intrustive and not that frequent, really. A couple of scenes in "Heavy Metal War", the last episode on the disc, turned out pretty poor, but otherwise they did an awesome job restoring this first season run, even including the original opening of the show and the commercial bumpers.I am still annoyed by the constant coloring mistakes made by the original animators of the show. I guess it's part of the charm, and it's probably best that Rhino left them like they were. I remember these coloring mistakes in the original series just as well, and it even bothered me back then in 1984-85 that Sunbow couldn't seem to tell the difference between Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp most of the time (though as the series goes on past the first 5 or 6, they DO get better about it...save for the part in Heavy Metal War where there are two Starscreams side by side, one of which was supposed to be Skywarp).I wish Rhino would take out the stupid cartoon openings on their videos and DVDs, though. While I know they are mostly a children's video company, with things like Transformers and GI Joe, they are mostly catering to adults...adults who don't want to sit through a cartoon rhino dressed like Elvis at the start of each disc while we wait for the menu to appear.Overall, if you grew up with this original series of Transformers, as I did, you will very much enjoy this set. I enjoyed every minute of it, and can hardly wait until late November now, where Rhino releases the first half of Season 2 in a box set. The second half of Season 2 follows in the Spring.So if you are waiting like I did, stop waiting now. After watching this, I felt like a kid again, and you will too. High School U.S.A. Review

I'm amazed I'd never heard of this film before. I bought it because I love Michael J. Fox and it looked like a funny movie. I was very impressed by it! Even though it was obviously a TV movie (there are fades for commercials still intact) and it is pretty low budget in terms of any kind of stunts or special effects, it's really funny and sports a great cast. In addition to Fox, you've got Anthony Edwards, Crispin Glover, Jon Gries, and half a dozen more recognizable names. The movie itself is really funny. It's about a guy (Fox) who likes a girl (Nancy McKeon), but she's dating the self-proclaimed king of the school (Edwards). Edwards' character and his cronies really give Fox's character (and the other non-kings) a hard time. So it's up to the underdogs to prove that kings don't belong in high schools. It's a great movie about friendship and there's even a drag race for an added bit of high school movie fun. Despite its moments of cheesiness, this is a real treat and I'd definitely recommend it.
