Hable con ella [VHS] Review

Talk to Her (Hable con ella) is Pedro Almodovar's sixteenth film as a director. It is difficult to describe the plot of the film as it travels back and forth in time, ranging from intense moments of psychological insight to an amusing silent film sequence, and I would loath to give away any of the entertaining and twisting plot development so characteristic of Almodovar's films. It primarily focuses on the relationship between two men: the antisocial, sexually ambiguous and lovingly charming Benigno (Javier Camara) and stalwart but emotional sensitive Marco (Dario Grandinetti) as they attend their respective women in permanent sleep at the hospital. A chance encounter at the theatre leads to a later encounter where a seemingly casual friendship grows into a desperate bond. Solitude is the predominant theme of this lively, entertaining and provoking film. There are countless moments for the protagonists to contemplate their life and loves alone. Despite its serious subject matter, Almodovar's masterful handling creates an entertaining story filled with wit and humor. The characters possess compelling quirks and are wonderfully realised in a stunning cast. Amazing performances are given from peripheral characters such as the ballerina instructor, Katerina (Geraldine Chaplin) and the caretaker (Chus Lampreave). Meticulous Almodovar fans will enjoy spotting cameo appearances by past stars from his films. This is an intricate and ceaselessly compelling film that should attract a wide mature audience. The film begins and ends in the theatre. The performances there suitably reflect the dilemmas evoked in the film and the relationships of the men with their women. The fascinating thing about this film is the way that a story between the men is handled on the surface whilst a subconsciouss story is told by the women in their comas. Gradually, through the use of flashbacks, their story emerges and we are led to image what is happening in their heads while in the hospital. It is interesting to note that the silent film sequence was originally written by Almodovar to be made into a full-length silent film. What we are given is a delightful though shocking glimpse of what that would have been. It is touching to see Almodovar's small nod of tribute to Michael Cunningham's The Hours which is a novel he states he really enjoyed. The film characteristically stretches our ideas of high drama and the far-reaching regions of sexuality. This is a beautiful film to follow from Almodovar's internationally successful All About My Mother (Todo Sobre Mi Madre). Anita and Me [VHS] Review

"Anita and Me" was a fun yet poignant movie which explores the themes of coming-of-age and integration. Set in the 70s, the story centers on 12-year-old Meena Kumar (played brilliantly by Chandeep Uppal), a Punjabi girl who lives in a small town somewhere in the Midlands, England in the 70s. Her parents are Indian migrants who have worked hard to achieve a reasonable standard of life, yet find it a challenge to integrate themselves into English society, preferring the company of those who share their culture. Meena on the other hand, yearns to be blonde, eat Western food, and become a published writer for Jackie magazine.

When Meena meets her new neighbor Anita (Anna Brewster), a slim, blonde teenage girl, Meena is determined to gain her confidence and become her friend, even if Anita's friendship might cause Meena to do things against her better judgement. Anita is the polar opposite of Meena - she comes from a broken family as opposed to Meena's stable, loving family; Anita is not studious nor highly literate; and, Anita sees sex as a means to an end and as a way to cope with her own bleak life. I found it hard to accept Meena's infatuation with Anita because Anita is not a likable person - she is spiteful and can be incredibly mean. Perhaps it is Anita's carefree, wanton approach to life and her freedom to do as she wishes, something which is denied Meena by her overprotective parents. But even here I found some inconsistencies. As protective as Meena's parents are, they allow her to go about on her own at all times of the day and night, something which is not satisfactorily explained in the movie. The scenes with the Indian relatives and friends is fun to watch, but these characters appear stereotypical without much character development.

In spite of these flaws, I gave the movie four stars because the lead actress did an excellent job portraying the adolescent angst of a young immigrant trying to fit into a society which for the time was incredibly racist. The scenes where Meena is hoping to catch the eye of a Caucasian boy and instead loses out to an obese Caucasian girl are painful to watch, yet shows with some degree of realism, how things were back then. This is a bittersweet coming-of-age drama which might appeal to fans of the genre.

In America [VHS] Review

For sheer catharsis, In America beats every movie I've seen since "The Sweet Hereafter" years ago. Like that movie, it deals with the aftermath of the death of a child; unlike that movie, it comes down (after much agony) on the side of a loving family as the only thing that can heal us. The Sullivans, a young couple with two adorable daughters, slip illegally into the U.S., moving to New York. In theory this is to help Da start his acting career; in reality, it is an attempt to escape from the sad memories of young son Frankie, recently died at 5 of a brain tumor. The performances are all, all stunning. Samantha Morton, her hair shorn like a penitent nun's, gives a stunning performance driven by the despair in her eyes. The real-world sisters Sara and Emma Bolger seem completely transparent; they leave the impression they are not acting at all, but really living the loss of their beloved brother. The African actor Djimon Hounsou looms like a sad but powerful diety over the sorrowful family, alternatively reflecting their pain and offering them solace. The ending will surprise you - I won't give it away here - but it is a sweet resolution. The film seems to have a basis in truth, as it is written by director Jim Sheridan and his two daughters, and dedicated at the end to the memory of Frankie Sheridan (who, as it happens, was Jim Sheridan's brother rather than his son). Respiro [VHS] Review

Poking around the internet for reviews of this film the words "inscrutable," "pointless," and "underdeveloped" keep cropping up. Could my taste for film really be that bad? Upon reading the reviews, however, it becomes apparent that most have missed the point of the film. Respiro is about a fishing village in Lampedusa and probably thousands of other small villages in the world where AN EFFORT TO FEIGN OR SHOW RESPECT (face-saving) goes a hell of a long way.Pietro is a fisherman who acts like the bad-ass patriarch in public, but is soft as a marshmallow at home. One scene that showed this is when a neighbor demands punishment for Pietro's son's for misconduct, Pietro manhandles the kid then placates the man by asking him to whip the boy. When the man refuses and tells Pietro to discipline the kid himself, a quick and subtle expression hesitation flashes across his face before he belts the boy a few quick ones. This act of deference to the neighbor is immediately accepted with gratitude and almost relief by the plaintiff, and all is settled.Another humorous scene shows Pietro telling his wife Grazia to take a hike because he is engaged in "man-talk" with a couple of pals. When she leaves we find out the conversation is about Pietro's son winning a train-set at a toy stall. This sort of phony machismo is also played out in fights the village youth gangs engage in. No one really throws punches but instead everyone rolls around on the ground. This ritualized fighting appears to allow all to let off steam without developing true animosity.Even the local cops feign machismo by engaging in a not-so-high speed chase of three harmless girls on a Vespa.Grazia, being manic-depressive, has a hard time with these kind of games and embarrasses others. Not knowing how to deal with her, the village suggest sending her off to an institution to Milan. When the angry Grazia learns of this she hides and is thought to have committed suicide. This elevates her status to that of a saint, and when she is found all are happy not because their "saint" has returned but because all can PRETEND to believe their "saint" has returned--thereby condoning her continued existence in the village.Respiro is about these kinds of communities where people don't sue or kill each other... What is sought is "Face." This is quite like how dogs relate to each other. Agressive behavior is displayed to elicit submission from the other dog, and as long as everyone follows this rule all is fine. In fact this example shows up in the film where Pietro, who is afraid of the family dog, gets rid of it because he is threatened by it's growls. He feels demeaned because he doesn't command respect from the dog. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkComment Comment

The Last Ride Review

This is a movie for people who love cars, period. It's no masterpiece or massive Hollywood bonanza, but a good addition to any car fan's collection, and delivers a generous dose of action - expected from this genre of car/action movies.

Well produced and well executed and creative in places. It's almost like a Pontiac commercial in some spots, but redeems itself with interesting characters and great acting from Dennis Hopper, who adds his own "gravitas" to this title. Also, true car nuts will appreciate the scene with the car show - I know I did since I go to them every year...!

For the first 20 minutes or so its pure Boy Racer meets Old Hot Rodder criminal (or Easy Rider?) - but with a twist. "JJ" (Carmack's girlfriend) is easy on the eyes, for sure.

If you are a fan of Hopper, or a fan of Fast and Furious (this movie was produced by the same guy), then this movie is a nice gem you might have missed.

Originally aired on cable on USA Network, the DVD has a lot of extras and the pleasant straight run with no commercials.

Ghoulies [VHS] Review

All I have to say is WOW. If you only see one movie this year, make it this unbelievably spellbinding horror-thriller about Jonathan Graves, son of Malcolm (the evil one), who calls upon the forces of evil, creating small mucus-covered muppet-type creatures. GHOULIES is the ultimate battle between good and evil. Brilliantly scripted and perfectly cast, the movie gives viewers plenty to think about. It addresses such topics as the supernatural, power, midgets, and parent-child relationships from a fresh and unconventional perspective. Peter Liapis's performance as Jonathan brilliantly juxtaposes the two conflicting sides of Jonathan's personality. If 6 out of 5 stars was an option, ghoulies would have received that honor, no question. Do yourself and all your friends a favor, RENT IT TODAY, or better yet, buy it. You will have no regrets.
