The War Review

I went into this thinking it would be a fairly lighthearted view of one family's troubles living in 1970 Mississippi. After one viewing, I was shocked. Shocked enough to end up watching it three times in two days.Are people really so mean to one another? Adults will stand by while a child gets beaten by a gang? People will purposefully ram other cars when they break down in the road? Children will fight and do life-threatening dares for property? You bet. This reality was what made this movie so compelling and unique in a world of bland, "let's not be controversial" movies. It isn't perfect, by any means. It's too long, has too many sub-stories to successfully complete them all, and is downright cheesy at times. But in terms of acting, Costner combines the haunted vet and nuturing father together believeably, and all the children are well done (there are some great faces, really interesting to look at). The most interesting relationship was between the three girls: a relationship which succesfully merged race, strength, loyalty, and good old fashioned girliness. Elijah Wood also has some truly great moments.The children's war was horrifying, and by far the best part of the movie. I couldn't look at the screen the first time I watched it because it was so disturbing (not because it's violent, but because it's kids who obviously don't realize the seriousness of the situation). It's a really good piece of work, transitioning from innocent to vicious so smoothly the viewers don't consciously realize there was even a shift. Very very well done.The thing I like about The War is that I still find myself thinking about it weeks later. Not so much about war itself, but about children and growing up, and losing the things you love. Only good movies make you do that. Most of the Scholastic Video Collection DVDs that I have are really good, though some of them are truly excellent. The main stories tend to be better than the bonus stories, but a few of the bonus stories are on par with the features. This DVD has a collection of stories that are even BELOW the standard of the most mediocre bonus stories. Don't waste your money on this one. Opt for Pete's a Pizza, Chyrsanthemeum, Harry the Dirty Dog, and Is Your Mama A Llama?

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure [VHS] Review

The original film, The Poseidon Adventure (1972) was a huge success. It helped to energize the disaster film genre. Having an all-star cast was also the big boost that audiences love to see. It was followed by Earthquake (1974), The Towering Inferno (1974), Airport 1975 (1974), Airport '77 (1977), Airport '79--The Concorde (1979) and Meteor (1979).
This paved the way for a sequel to "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), albeit, seven years later, but the storyline takes place after the end of the first film which makes Beyond The Poseidon Adventure (1979) a delight to watch including a new all-star cast: Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, Peter Boyle, Jack Warden, Shirley Knight, Slim Pickens, Shirley Jones, Karl Malden, Veronica Hamel, Mark Harmon, Angela Cartwright.
A salvage crew whethers the storm to get to the Poseidon ship. The survivors got out, but now the salvage crew must go in and why not take some treasures with them too. Telly Savalas plays a tycoon with his guard crew has exactly the same thing in mind. Once inside the ship, they take the same path as the survivors did and it does look familar, but they find some other passageways to explore and they find more people alive. That's what makes this film fun. Going in is one thing, but trying to get back out is another. This cruise ship is still moving and exploding. It could totally sink in any minute.
2 Remakes:
NBC/Hallmark has made their own " The Poseidon Adventure" television mini-series starring Adam Baldwin and Steve Guttenberg. It will be broadcast on NBC, November 20, 2005.
Warner Brothers will be releasing a new version, "POSEIDON", on May 12, 2006 for the movie theatres. The all-star cast will include Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum and Josh Lucas.
Both versions will be different.

*ONG BAK:THAI WARRIOR (RENTAL READY) Review

You like Jackie Chan films? Or remember Bruce Lee? If so, don't miss this one from Thailand, where the film industry is thriving more than ever. And remember the name of Tony Jaa, stunt-turned-actor (incidentally, he was a stunt in the second 'Mortal Kombat' film, and his then co-worker was Ray Park, 'X-Men') Jaa's martial arts skills based on Muay Thai (Thai-style fighting) are simply astonishing.

[NO STUNTS, NO CGIs] Strangely titled film 'Ong-bak: Thai Warrior' is, as the title says, an exciting Thai actioner starring Tony Jaa (real name Panom Yeerum), who plays the hero Ting living in an apparently sleepy country in Thailand. Not exactly, you soon see. In this interesting opening scene, you see these scantily dressed guys climing up one big tree, and during the fighting, they fall one by one onto the ground. This is actually a kind of festival, or ritual, of the hero's village, but what you should realize is, the film uses NO CGIs, NO WIRES ATTACHED.

[FORGET THE STORY] Story? Need one? OK, Tony Jaa's hero has to track down the theives who cut off and stole the head of the sacred statue in his village. With this mission, he goes to town, where he meets one middle-aged man George, and his friend (perhaps girlfriend) Muay. Before you know it, they all got in troubles for the thugs start attack them.

[ACTIONS] Then, actions begin, which are simply eye-poping. One example: in the cat-and-mouse chase scene in the market, running away from the bad guys, Tony Jarr jumps over the tables, stalls, and cars (!) with Jackie's comic timing. And look how he slides into UNDER an RV! To add to them, he leaps through a ring of barbed wires (real ones, I suppose), and comes out unharmed, never stopping a moment!

Himself a Muay Thai fighter, Tony Jaa (or his character) joins in several illegal boxing bouts. You might say you have seen this kind of bloody, bone-crunching fight sequences in the past. Not Tony Jaa's high-kicking that strikes the opponent at the speed of lightening. This sounds like cliche, I know, but it is true, his agile movement reminds me of the deadly power of Bruce Lee and the ultra-fast speed of Jet Li.

And that's not the end, for Jaa does many, many other actions, which I refuse to write about here, for you should see them for yourself in theatres. Again, I say, Tony Jaa uses no stunts, no special effects or no strings. Of course, he will not win the Oscar for acting the hero of this film, but when he can fight like Lee, Chan, and Li, who cares?

My advice: 'Ong-bak' is a must for any fans who love action films. Watch it, and be surprised.

Aria [VHS] Review

ARIA is a wonderful film. Each director chose an Operatic Aria to work with for interpretation to the screen.
The new DVD release is to be avoided. I pre-ordered this a couple of months ago and upon arrival, was totally dissapointed by the quality. It's not 16x9 as advertised. It's not even full frame as it was filmed. Very poor transfer from an old answer or release print. Poor sound, doesn't even look good with a 1080 upconvert DVD player.
I have this film on VHS tape. Three years ago I transfered it to DVD. My VHS tape copy is far superior to this release.
In short, it sucks.......

The Waiting Time [VHS] Review

If your a fan of John Thaw this is for you. Thaw gives another excellent performance in this "cold war" thriller as a retired spy who is pulled into a murder mystery with international ramifications. It is set in contemperary times but feels like a good old espionage story with a new twist or 2.There is even a fair bit of action sort of in the Secret Agent/Dangerman "realistic" spy mode. The Linguini Incident [VHS] Review

I'm always the last to know anything, but in case there is anyone else who might be even more "last to know" than I am, here's the scoop.

I just found out by sheer accident a few nights ago that The Linguini Incident WAS released on DVD. However, it was put out under a completely different title: Shag-o-rama. The information I found said that the movie wasn't changed a bit, except for the title credit.

Since it's already out-of-print, for copies of this DVD you'll probably have to watch eBay (I bought one there) or used DVD shops in your local area, if you have any.

And for the record, I found this to be a quirky, off-beat, romantic caper comedy. It's funny and cute, even if it is slightly over the top. (And I really loved Arquette's 1920s outfits!)
