Classic Albums: The Who - Who's Next [VHS] Review

If you love the Who, this is one of the best documents about them, even though we have to spent part of our dwindling lives listening to Dave Marsch's drivel instead of Pete's during the too-short duration of the video. For insight into the music itself, this tape showed me things I had heard for years, but never really grasped, like how Keith Moon would play riffs instead of drum patterns, and how much energy the Who had. Listening to the un-mixed tracks from "Goin' Mobile" are incredible. Pete Townshend is always generous when talking about his music, and no less here. For an avid Synth fan like me, who worships "Baba O'Riley," what a real treat to see Pete's ARPs at work, and how he created the groundbreaking, unique, and staggering synth backing that makes the songs on Who's Next the great works they are, despite what Roger Daltrey thinks. There is too much "Won't Get Fooled Again" in this documentary. They are always cutting back to it, and Pete does an acoustic version that while fun, is not really necessary. Other music on the record is slighted at the expense of the bigger hits. The whole Lifehouse disaster is dealt with; mainly Pete's inability to articulate his vision. Who's Next is one of the greatest, if not the greatest record in Rock history and this tape helps explain in. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Swing [VHS] Review

A definite feel-good film, if ever there was. Chances are, you'll be rolling up the living room carpet to jive and jitterbug as the band swings its thing. Hugo Speer is banged up with...er Clarence Clemons...who teaches him the sax. On his release (Clarence remains inside, presumably for playing with Springsteen for so long), Hugo forms a swing band with a National Front drummer and the horn section from the local Orange Lodge (having made a Faustian pact with his uncle). You'd better work our the rest yourself. Lisa Stansfield is brilliant as the (now married) ex-girlfriend who becomes the band's singer. If you can imagine The Full Monty meeting The Committments with a dash of The Blues Brothers you're better than me, but you'll probably like Swing. We did - and the carpet's staying up.

Orphans [VHS] Review

"Orphans" is one of the best Scottish films in the last few years. More accessible than the likes of "My Name Is Joe", this film has a very dark streak of humour running through it. Dark, bitter but very very funny. Essentially the tale of three brothers dealing with the death of their mother & the organising of her funeral, it's really about how the brothers relate to each other & relate to the death of the one bond they shared. Highly reccomended. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?Yes No Report abuse | PermalinkCommentComment

Junior Review

At first I really didn't want to see this movie but was forced into it,much like Alex Hesse (schwarzenegger) was talked into doing an illegal scientific experiment on himself by his collegue Larry Arbogast (DeVito).Alex has invented a wonderful new drug to help women who tend to have miscarriages. After the FDA won't approve expectane and the university kicks him out of their lab Alex decides to move back to europe.Larry talks him into doing an experiment on himself so that they can get funding for more research. And after they get enough data they'll end it and noone will ever know. But the problem is Alex gets attatched to his unborn baby and continues taking the expectane without Larry knowing,of course he eventually does find out and aggrees to help him.Along the way though Alex falls in love with Dr. Diana Reddin (Thompson) and she has a key role in the movie so pay attention in the resturant scene.I don't understand why so many people didn't enjoy this film.Maybe it's because they have no sense of what a good movie really is.I recomend this movie because it's heartwarming, sweet, and it's just plain funny to see Arnold have morning sickness. The Fastest Gun Alive [VHS] Review

The image of the western gunfighter has been indelibly etched by the likes of John Wayne in the forties and Clint Eastwood in the sixties as a supremely confident and capable shootist. It is rare for Hollywood to buck this trend but in THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE director Robert Rouse peels away the layers that all too often separate celluloid fiction from brute fact. Glen Ford is George Temple, a one time fast draw expert who has spent years trying to live down a wall of self-imposed isolation that he feels would be needed each time another quick draw wannabe wants to put him to the test. He has learned to camouflage his unwanted skill over the years. He has married an understanding woman (Jeanne Crain), who suffers in silence along with him each time he has to struggle to contain the itch to show off a talent that she knows will eventually kill him. The first half of this superb film is a study in how one man chooses to live a life to which he is clearly unsuited. He runs a small store in a small town surrounded by folk who have no idea who or what he is. The focus is on character development, no small feat in the gunfighter genre. In the next town, a bank robbery led by Broderick Crawford yanks Temple out of his comfortable pseudo-existence. Crawford hears of Temple's speedy draw and pauses in his escape from a posse to challenge Temple in a showdown. It is almost beside the point that any desperado would chance getting caught by the law merely to add a notch to his gun. From the first reel to the last, both Temple and the bank robber are on tracks that do not permit any deviation. In an odd sort of way, both men share more than speed with a pistol. Each is driven by the gun: Crawford, to venerate it, and Temple to negate it. The climactic showdown is the cracklingly effective sort of western legend that has been all too often obscured by the fake glories of the movie cowboy. Glen Ford is a movie cowboy here too, but he makes you think that just maybe this is the way that shootouts at high noon must have been like. This gem is rarely seen except on cable. Catch it and see how a small part of the west was won.

The Night of the Generals [VHS] Review

I'd waited a long time for this to come out on DVD and was excited when I found this print available on Amazon. Regrettably, upon receiving the DVD I discovered that the quality was dreadful. This is undoubtedly the worst transfer of a film I've ever seen, and after looking at it for just a minute or so, I found myself getting a headache. The print is so blurred I actually adjusted my glasses a few times to ensure that it was not me.
Do yourself a favor and wait for a cleaner version than this wretched one.

Summerslam [VHS] Review

Dudley Boyz vs La Resistance(champions)tag titles on the line
- It got the phoenix crowd pumped. Pretty good match in all, but the ending ruined it all by the la resistance winning! They can't even wrestle! 3/5 - to short.Undertaker vs A-Train
- Taker brawls this one out. I thought it would be a heck of a lot better, but A-Train and Taker prooved that they cannot have a good singles match together, unless weapons are involved. 2/5Fatal 4 Way for the US Title : Tajiri vs Eddie Guererro(champion) vs Chris Benoit vs Rhyno.
- It got the crowd moving. Eddie was entertaining; im sure he was the one keeping this match up and awake. However, it was a great way to get the peopl at home and in phoenix ready for the rest of the show. Eddie retains the belt via pinfall. 4/5 - eddie makes that 4 possible!Shane McMahon vs Eric Bischoff : Falls count anywhere, No D.Q.
- Shane once again shows his crazy style. The fans give big pops when Shane was beating him, which was almost the whole match! Then J. Coachman comes in and turns heel while helping Bischoff, but it back fires when austin comes down and stuns coach! Then Shane gives his famous elbow onto the spanish announce team to win. huge pops. 4/5 thanks to shane, could of been a stealer.Kurt Angle(champion) vs Lesnar : WWE Heavyweight Title.
- Oh man this was f***ing amazing!!!! They took it out to each other. Angle reversed the F5 into a D.D.T, AMAZING! Brock man handles him for a while like he always does, but then Angle counters the F5 into an ankle lock were he wins! Angle retains the title via submission. 5/5 - best match of the night.Kane vs RVD : No D.Q.
- Crazy match. This isnt the exact definition of no disqualifications, but it certainly leans towards punishment. Kane beat RVD's ass. Kane lol hahahaha falls on the ropes while attempting a flying clothes line. Tombtone on steel steps. Kane wins via pinfall. 4/5 - Kanes monstrous self returns. Elimination Chamber : World Heavyweight Title
HBK vs Randy Orton vs Goldberg vs HHH(champion) vs Kevin Nash vs Chris Jericho.
- Its kind of short, but wreckless what so ever!!!! It was not bad of a start, until the final man came out of the chamber. GOLDBERG! The last guy out of the chamber, and he ran through everyone! Eliminated HBK, Y2J and Randy Orton in minutes! (Nash was out first due to Y2J eliminating him). HHH was really injured, but to hide it, he got sweet chin music from hbk to knock him out of the match, until he was left with goldberg! As goldberg goes for the spear, flair slides in the sledghammer, hits goldberg, and ends it. Really crappy ending, HHH did nothing the whole match and wins this massively hyped match. HHH retains title and wins via pinfall on goldberg.
5/5 - simply because of the goldberg part (PS watch the spear of Y2J you'll go nuts!). In all, 4/5, simply because of the WWE Title match, the elimination chamber match, and some entertaining openers.
