Casino [VHS] Review

This new "Special Edition" is a watered down version of last year's Anniversary Edition. Usually this is a bad thing. However, since Universal can't seem to figure out how to make a DVD-18 work properly, it's actually good they have seen fit to release this title as a single-sided, dual-layered DVD. Unfortunately, in doing so they have dropped most of the extras found on the Anniversary Edition. Still found on this release are the deleted scenes, the commentary and one of the featurettes.

Why they didn't decide to do 2 DVD-9's for this is beyond comprehension, but at least they've dropped the list price a few dollars.

My rating is for the overall the release, although in my opinion both the film and the transfer on this release get 5 stars. Colors are vivid and rich, and detail is very fine.

In closing, if you're not a "special features" junkie, definitely get this release, as it's much more likely to play properly. If you must have the Anniversary Edition, make sure you play the disc right away, because most likely, it will have problems.

Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night [VHS] Review

A year after Pinocchio (Voiced by Scott Grimes) became human thanks to his fairy godmother (Voiced by Rickie Lee Jones), a mysterious creepy carnival comes to town and sets itself all nicely in the opening. The next day Pinocchio had his very first birthday thanks to his father Gheppeto (Voiced by Tom Bosley) and the Fairy Godmother as he is told by her that he must not take his freedom of humanity for granted or else he'll become a puppet again. His father assigns him to deliver a jewelbox to the mayor in town but gets distracted on the way. A con-artist raccoon named Scalawag (voiced by Ed Asner) and his monkey assistant Igor (Voiced by Frank Welker) swindle him as they give him a worthless fake ruby for the box, it upsets his father so much that he decies to runaway and it also upsets his new living toy bug named Gee Willakers (Voiced by Don Knotts). He decides that he wants to join the carnival but gets seduced by a lovely girl puppet named Twinkle (Voiced by Lana Beeson) who is the main star of the show but is tricked by an evil puppeteer named Puppetino (Voiced by William Windom) who is the title villain's minion and he transforms Pinocchio back into a puppet. He does get rescued by his fairy godmother later to be human again as he must find the two scoundrels that swindled him earlier yet he does as they go after the traveling carnival only to end up in the nightmarish hellish realm of the empire of the night conducted by the diabolical Emperor (Voiced by James Earl Jones) who wants Pinocchio's soul.

Co-starring Jonathan Harris and Linda Gary, this is an awesome and overlooked animated fantasy gem from Filmation (Makers of He-Man, She-Ra, Bravestarr, Ghost Busters, Fat Albert and Star Trek animated) and New World Pictures in 1987. The film took five years of hard work from the company as it was their most expensive project ever but unfortunately it did bad at the box-office and got mixed reviews as now it has a small cult following. I'd say this is Filmation's best animated movie around! i love how it doesn't focus on stock animation that the company is known for but actual true animation and i also like how it's faithful to Collodi's vision of the Pinocchio books. It's a nice sequel to the classic fairy tale and up there with Disney's Pinocchio as the second best Pinocchio movie ever, this movie is just as dark as Carlo Collodi's book and Disney's version but more disturbing and eerie even with that horrifying moment where Puppetino turns Pinocchio into a puppet.

The songs are quite good like the powerful "Love is the Light Inside Your heart" to the fun and upbeat "Your a Star". I also love how well animated and drawn this movie is and the voice acting by the cast is solid including the brilliantly executed Emperor himself. I was 6 in 1987 as i remembered on christmas night i went to see this at the mall with my mother and this scared the living crap out of me yet i loved it the same as i do with Disney's version but some parts creeped me out at that age. It's one of my favorite animated movies of all time and a perfection companion for anyone who loves Disney's version or who likes rare cult animated movies.

Starz/Anchor Bay or Shout Factory need to release this on DVD badly in a special edition but look online for this movie to take a look as it's a lost diamond in the rough but maybe too intense for small children as it nearly got a PG rating, great fun.

Mio min Mio [VHS] Review

Bosse Ohlsson is an average boy living in Stockholm with his horrid Aunt Edna and Uncle Sixten. On one particularly cruel day he goes out with his best friend to fly kites and on the way home(when he was already late), boys take his hat and get it dirty. Aunt Edna makes such a bad fuss that Bosse decides to run away to find his father. He visits the local shop and the owner gives him an apple and a letter to mail. He stops at a bench area and just as he's about to eat the apple, it turns golden and a spirit comes out of a bottle lying on the ground. It turns out that the spirit is from the land of faraway and has been sent to bring Bosse there to meet his father. Bosse goes to the land of faraway and his finds out his real name is Mio and he has a horse named Miramis. Joy is short lived though because he finds out that an evil night Kato has kidnapped all the children and is keeping them prisoner outside of the land. Since Mio is the only child of royal blood, he must journey with Jum Jum and Miramis to save the children and destroy Kato. I love this movie as it is one of my childhood favorites. British Invasion arrives again at the doorstep of VCI, and restored from their vaults.

This, the seventh and final film in the series, sees Leslie Phillips romping around a luxury liner, in what comes across as a less funny cross between 'Doctor At Sea' and 'Carry On Cruising' By now a long way from the innocence of 'Doctor In The House',

Dr. Tony Burke (Leslie Phillips) is in love with Ophelia O'Brien (Angela Scoular) but doesn't have time to propose to her as she leaves for a cruise to the Mediterranean. Also on board the cruise ship is an old school chum of Burke's who plays 'Dr.Dare' in a very popular TV series and who women flock to. Burke decides to join the cruise, but is first apprehended as a stowaway, and then becomes the captain's steward. For Burke, trying to talk to Ophelia is a hard enough task, but he meets some funny characters on board, such as a pools winner and a very stubborn captain.

Overall this is a very basic film that has nothing special. Fans of the original Doctor films will feel that this has drifted far from port, can be enjoyed if in the mood, it's far funnier than the previous film in the series, the lukewarm 'Doctor In Clover'.

Spartacus [VHS] Review

If you're a fan of the movie "Spartacus", this is the version to get; the Universal DVD is as bare bones as they get with just the movie. The Criterion version looks great. The facelift the film received help return much of its luster. Kubrick later disowned his version of the epic Hollywood Sword & Sandal genre, but Kubrick brings much of his sensibility to bear; the fight sequences and epic vistas bring to mind Kubrick's work on Paths of Glory and 2001. True, this isn't a complete Kubrick picture; Kubrick had nothing to do with the screenplay and Douglas had all but cast the picture in collaboration with director Anthony Mann (dismissed after butting heads with Douglas one too many times).

Is it Kubrick's finest film? Well, frankly no it isn't. It's an interesting mishmash between Kubrick's detached, ironic style and Hollywood glitz. Spartacus is Kubrick for people who don't care for Kubrick's detached style. It doesn't measure up to Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 or A Clockwork Orange although it does compare favorable to the much darker Paths of Glory.

Kubrick stated that his intent at the time was to subvert the cliches of the genre. As a result, Kubrick manages to reinvent a genre that was in danger of becoming a parody of itself. As a collaborative effort, Spartacus is a great piece of entertainment and far more sophisticated than almost everything else that came out of Hollywood at the time.

The transfer is beautiful with much of Kubrick's bold use of color restored. The strong acting of most of the cast has always been a virtue of Sparatcus. The soundtrack has been meticulously transferred to 5.1 and Alex North's beatiful score has never sounded so sweet, tragic and powerful before. The audio commentary is the same one that was on the laserdisc version. It provides additional understanding about the complexity of making an independently produced project like Spartacus. Kirk Douglas' bold decision to produce the film himself (with Universal-International distributing)was a leap of faith in both the material and the talented director.

The second disc is stuffed with supplements that are found nowhere else.There's two older interviews with Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons plus one that Ustinov did in 1992 for the laserdisc edition. It's delightful and he shares a number of funny stories about the picture. There's also a text overview of Kubrick's career and his involvement with the picture. Included also are sketches Kubrick made for the motion picture (artistically they're nothing special but they do provide insight into Kubrick's role in the visualization of the film). Included are some vintage newsreels and a promotional film originally made but unfinished for Spartacus that gives us a glimpse behind the scenes. The promotional film is missing it's soundtrack (in fact, it might have been lost if not for the forsight of a private collector) and has much from North's score. We also get to glimpse at Saul Bass' wonderful title design sequence.

Criterion has been both praised and criticized for their DVDs and laserdiscs before. While they tend to be expensive, this is the complete package. Occasionally Criterion will release a package that isn't up to their usual standards. Spartacus isn't one of them. Robert Harris (Harris restored the film along with Vertigo)evidently was also involved in the transfer to DVD. If you want a spectacular transfer of the film, loads of extras about the making and background of the project from those involved, this is the set to pick up.

A seemingly mild-mannered editor of a muscle magazine finds his sexual desires ignited when he becomes involved in an S&M relationship with a muscular bodybuilder in this sexually explicit, extremely controversial drama. For, during their lovemaking, he is unable to control his pleasure/pain and in a fit of sexual intensity, cuts off his lover's arm. He is sent to prison, is released and (with the detached arm in formaldehyde) searches the dark city streets for his now one-armed object of affection. A homage to Pier Paolo Pasolini, the film is quite strange and sexy. (Japanese w/ subtitles)
