Product Description

This boxed set of seven films by François Truffaut (five features and two short films) includes a selection of classic and lesser-known titles from the master of the French New Wave.

Jules and Jim is considered by many to be the director's masterpiece. Jeanne Moreau is superb as Catherine, an enigmatic woman who comes between two friends in this exquisitely paced story of a doomed love triangle. The Woman Next Door, made 20 years later in 1981, also explores the potentially destructive power of love. Gérard Depardieu plays a married man whose life is turned upside down by the return of a former lover. A third film explores the dark side of passion--The Soft Skin, made in 1964. When a successful, married publisher (Jean Desailly) embarks on an affair with an airline stewardess, deception, jealousy, and passion combine to create a potentially lethal cocktail.

Three films in this set trace the life of Antoine Doinel, a character who first appeared in Truffaut's The 400 Blows. Antoine and Colette, originally part of an episodic film by several directors entitled L'Amour à vingt ans (1962), appears here with another charming short film, Les Mistons (1957). In Stolen Kisses (1968), Antoine is in his twenties, just out of the army, and looking for love and employment, while in Bed and Board (1970), he has married and has a child, although parenthood hasn't made him any more mature. These films document an extraordinary collaboration between Truffaut and actor Jean-Pierre Leaud, together creating one of the most fascinating and enduring characters in cinema. --Simon Leake

8 Truffaut Six-Pack Collection [VHS] Review

From one of the greatest directors of all time, this collection is an excellent journey into the world of Francois Truffaut. Truffaut is a master at presenting the inner turmoil and conflict of his characters, particularly in romantic relationships. "Jules and Jim" is the story of a love triangle between Jules and Jim, two best friends, and Catherine, played by the enchanting Jeanne Moreau. The superb direction by Truffaut displays raw and realistic human emotion, the passion and pain of their relationship, which lasts several decades. The Antoine Doinel series offers insight into Director Truffaut's life, his onscreen alter ego. The collection includes the first four films."The 400 Blows" chronicles Antoine's life of crime at the age of 13, desperately trying to escape his father's wrath and his teacher's harsh words."Love at Twenty/Antoine et Colette", a short film of unrequited love between Doinel and an older student."Stolen Kisses" shows Doinel right out of an army prison, trying to find his niche with work and with women. Antoine finally decides on detective work, but cannot come to any conclusion regarding the two women in his life, an older married beauty and a young attractive musician. "Bed and Board" finds Doinel a married man with a child. The discovery of an affair forces him out of the house and into adulthood. (I highly recommend purchasing the last film in the series - "Love on the Run" - it is not part of this collection.)Gerard Depardieu is featured in "The Woman Next Door," former lovers who find themselves "reunited" years later when both are married to other people. Their passion is rekindled. Another display of infidelity, "The Soft Skin" finds an author with a wife and child falling in love with a flight attendant. His inability to choose ruins one relationship and while trying to reconcile with the other; tragic events ruin his plan. These timeless masterpieces by auteur Truffaut is an excellent addition to a film collection. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? The Hours Review

An intelligent and lyrical film adaptation of Michael Cunningham's exquisite Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the ways in which any person's life can be drastically altered during the course of a seemingly normal day. The story cuts back and forth between three women's stories: in 1923, novelist Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) is writing her novel "Mrs. Dalloway" while recuperating from a mental breakdown; in 1950's Los Angeles, housewife Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) is reading Woolf's book and feeling a growing sense of desperation about her bland suburban existence; and in 2001 New York, middle-aged Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) is planning a party to honor a dying friend (Ed Harris) who has referred to her by the nickname "Mrs. Dalloway" since their youthful affair many years previously. Like Cunningham's book, the film spins all three stories simultaneously, pointing out the similarities and differences between each of the women's lives; and then finally ties all three threads together in a spectacularly clever and thought-provoking twist that reveals the larger pattern of the plot (some audiences members in the theatre where I saw the film actually gasped aloud as they began to understand). As befits such a character-driven film, the acting in "The Hours" is uniformly superb. Meryl Streep is luminous throughout as Clarissa, but particularly shines in her final scenes as she welcomes a stranger into her home; and Julianne Moore brings a fascinating combination of fragility and power to the role of the repressed Laura. Toni Collette infuses her short scenes as Laura's friend and neighbor Kitty with a marvelous counterpoint to Moore's quiet introspection; Miranda Richardson is restrained Victorian perfection as Virginia Woolf's demure sister; and Ed Harris is achingly brilliant in the small but showy role of Clarissa's dying friend. Among this handful of flawless characterizations, it is Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf who nonetheless stands out. She completely disappears into her role; although much comment has been made about Kidman's prosthetic nose and the way it completely changes her appearance, it is not makeup alone which transforms the vivacious actress into the dowdy authoress. Kidman uses her mouth and eyes with incredible economy: her bowed lips move without disturbing her pale, translucent cheeks; and her downturned, darting eyes communicate eloquently her character's sense of uneasy restlessness. Kidman's Virginia seems uncomfortable in her tall body, and her voice is dangerously strained. It's a transcendent performance, and one with which Kidman solidifies her growing reputation as one of her generation's most talented screen actresses. The film is beautifully photographed in dark, muted hues; the sets appear just as they were described in Cunningham's hauntingly visual novel. While Philip Glass's score is at times a bit obtrusive, it nonetheless contibutes effectively to the atmosphere of the film. The most stunning technical achievement of the film is the wonderful costume design; clothing styles and fabrics have been painstakingly planned and executed, providing some subtle foreshadowing and highlighting of important themes and motifs thoughout the narrative. Costumer Ann Roth should definitely find herself in the running for an Oscar, as should Streep, Moore, Kidman, Harris, director Stephen Daldry, film editor Peter Boyle, and of course, the Picture itself. Altogether, "The Hours" is an outstanding film that provides an extraordinary cast ample and unique opportunities to shine, especially its formidable trio of leading ladies. 5-PATH 2.0 Hypnosis Training Review

Important Note: There seems to be some confusion here. Just to clarify the previous review from Ken Hoffman the VHS tape set that Ken Hoffman is referring to is an older version that is no longer published. That older set included a total of 10-VHS Tapes. He seems to be comparing the description of this new DVD set which is completely different from the older set he has. Cal Banyan has developed a new training program that is 20 DVDs, 4 CDs, and one Data disc. This is the set shown on this page. This new program is called the 5-Path 2.0 Set. It is over 65 hours in its entirety. A full 5-stars will be my review.

The Locket Review

After reading the Locket, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it had been made into a movie. The story is about a young man, Michael, who after the death of his mother, gets a job at a nursing home and befriends an elderly woman Ester who changes his life for the better and shows him what faith and forgivenss are all about. MIchael has to go through many trials in his young life, but decides to become better, not bitter from them. The book is definitely better, so I would recommend reading it before watching the movie. I also recommend reading the sequel, the Carousel. The movie unfortunately doesn't have nearly all the details and a few minor changes were made.( For instance in the movie Michael's father is alive and he and Michael become friends, but in the book he dies.) I thought the director picked the perfect actors for the role. I cannot imagine someone other than the talented Vanessa Redgrave playing the part of Ester, nor anyone playing the part of sensitive, honest Michael other than the hot Chad Willet.

He Got Game Review

Spike Lee's film contribution of 1998 marks his greatest graduation as a filmmaker since "Malcolm X". "He Got Game" documents the story of Jesus Shuttlesworth, the top high school basketball player in the U.S. who is receiving incentives one way or the other, to attend someone's university. Jesus' father Jake - in prison for accidentally killing his mother - is offered an early parole in exchange for Jesus' enrollment at the governor's alma mater. Jake has one week to convince his son, who wants nothing to do with him. This film is really not about basketball, it is instead, a tale of a father seeking the forgiveness & respect of his son. Lee makes good documentation of the cutthroat world of professional sports recruiting. Washington, as always, delivers a touching performance. Whether asking his son for forgiveness, or giving his wife's tombstone an embrace, Washington portrays a flawed man in deep need to heal his family.Lee had no need to cast an NBA player, but cast Ray Allen anyway, who does a fine job. The music, a mix of Public Enemy and Aaron Copeland, is an odd combination that Lee puts to effective use. This film introduced Lee's slower pacing of storytelling, which he would continue to do with "Summer Of Sam", and it works quite well. The Killer Shrews [VHS] Review

This is an oldie but goodie. It is standard black and white drive-in silliness about scientists on a remote island who have created 'giant killer shrews' that have more than a passing resemblance to collies with bad toupees. This movies stars James Best and Ken Curtis (you've seen them in westerns, including 'Gunsmoke') as well as Ingrid Goude (Miss Universe Sweden 1956) as the daughter of the principal nutty scientist of the Shrew Island Nature Preserve. Shrews are the smallest of the insectivores, and world wide there are approximately 314 species, of which 'Giant Killer Shrew' is not one. All shrews have short legs, and a long snout. They also have beady little eyes and are primarily insectivores. Shrews are voracious eaters and are easily prone to starvation, so at least in this one area the movie has it right: in the words of Captain Thorne Sherman (James Best) "it looks like a small rat, and smells like a skunk." I couldn't have said it better. Enough of the biology lesson, back to the film...In this film Captain Sherman and his unlucky sidekick find Shrew Island while hiding out from a hurricane. They are convinced to stay by the sultry Ingrid Goude, who speaks mysteriously with a Swedish accent despite her father evidently being a Texan. Once nightfall arrives everyone is trapped in the compound as the 300 killer shrews try to get in. Somehow the hurricane affects them, and they are starving, too, so pandemonium breaks out. (The science of the movie is a bit hazy about all this.) Turns out that the shrews in question have deadly poisonous saliva, so even a scratch from a shrew tooth is fatal! They also can dig through walls, scale fences, climb trees, open doors, steal shoes, and do algebra. OK, they can't do algebra, but they can do amazing things to get at their captive audience. The survivors eventually construct a 'tank' of 55 gallon drums and wade to the boat unperturbed once in the water, because this species of shrew (unlike the other 314) can't swim. Lucky for them! This is a great film of the genre. It is quick (69 minutes) and fun from start to finish. It was once riffed by the MST3K folks, but I have not seen that version in quite some time, though I recall it being a fun episode. This one is a step back to the monster movies of yesteryear, and it feels great to watch! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?
