Antony and Cleopatra [VHS] Review

In 1999, Timothy Dalton portrayed the Nile Queen's first Roman lover, Julius Caesar, in the three-hour TV mini-series, CLEOPATRA.

William Shakepeare wrote ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA in the early years of the 17th Century. Based on Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's Life of Marcus Antonius, it follows the lives of the two central characters from the Parthian War until both die by their own hands.

This three-hour adaptation filmed on a simulated 16th Century stage is somewhat weakened by questionable supporting cast choices and actors that stray at times into histrionics. They seem to compete for who can emote the most violently, yet on balance it's a good production.

Redgrave looks gorgeous in the lead. Dalton (Antony) was 007 after Roger Moore. Geary, one of the weaker links, plays Octavius Caesar. He was half of GENERAL HOSPITAL's legendary Luke and Laura pairing. Nichols (Charmain) and Koenig (Pompey) were members of the original Star Trek crew. Both seem out of place here.

If you like Shakespeare you may find this show's authentic look refreshing but its execution at times rather mediocre.
