Word of Mouth [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ] Review

I seem to be in a rut. Word of Mouth is the third softporn flick, in less than a month that I reviewed, that features Catalina Larranaga in the leading role.

I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I don't have a thing for Catalina. Not that Catalina isn't attractive. She is, in a wholesome, Sandy Duncan with dark hair sort of way. Especially in Word of Mouth, where she wears her hair short like Sandy Duncan did.(I know. Who the h*ll is Sandy Duncan?). If you're over forty you should remember Duncan. She was a popular TV actress in the eighties, that was known for her warm smile and her easygoing manner.

Appearing wholesome wasn't a problem in the first two movies, being a research psychologist in each, but in this film she portrays a high priced call girl and wholesome seems just a little out of place. Then again, she has made several soft-core movies so maybe appearances can be misleading.

Word of Mouth

Torrie is the subject of a documentary movie about a high priced lady companion. She has agreed to be interviewed and filmed by Darrow an independent documentary filmmaker and she even takes him along on some of her tricks. Darrow's girlfriend/editor notices that he is very defensive about Torrie and thinks he is getting too involved and falling for the prostitute. Darrow catches Torrie in a couple lies and wonders what her real agenda is. Torrie is constantly teasing Darrow and eventually he decides he must have her and they have a fling, the aftermath of which ultimately leaves both parties unfulfilled and disappointed in the other.

Conclusion

Word of Mouth, despite the positive hype was not one of the better softcore movies I have seen. True Catalina is an eyeful but she's not really a sexpot. Another fault I find with her and the rest of the cast is the sex scenes seemed wooden and unnatural. Personally I think if a guy was going to spend a couple thou a night on a chick, he would want someone a lot hotter that Catalina. That's another problem I had with the movie. Torries clients are ostensibly buying her services for all night and yet after a five minute tryst, they get dressed and say goodbye. One guy in a Limo all he got was a two minute BJ.

The cast was OK but I've seen better and the acting was average.

Okay, enough on the dark side. Problems I've pointed out aside. There is a lot of T&A displayed, though of the tamer variety and the film moves along at a good clip for ninety-three minutes. The cinematography is first class as we have come to expect from Playboy. Another oddity is of the three movies I have seen with Catalina, the director has been the same - Tom Lazarus. I wonder if Catalina and Tom have got something going. Not that odd? Sorry.

I give Word of Mouth a whopping 3 stars

Then I'll Be Free To Travel Home (3-Disc Set) (Institutional Use: University/College) Review

This CD was worth the time and energy to view It provided information that you otherwise would not have received in school or any place else. It was quite detail in providing the trials and misfortune of those who came to this country in bondage. At the same time, it enlighten you to the success of many of their leaders who pursue positive benefits for their people. I would recommend it for everyone so that they know the truth to the historical background in lower Manhattan.

Japan released, NTSC/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard R1 US DVD player. You need region free DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: French 2.0 mono; Japanese (Subtitles), FULL SCREEN, SYNOPSIS: The primary protagonists in this routine drama are two French journalists, Delmas (Pierre Grasset) and Moreau (Jean-Pierre Melville, the director), and also the city of New York at night. The two journalists are on the trail of a story - a French diplomat has disappeared from the U.N. for no apparent reason. As they wander through the city tracking down the reason for the disappearance, the journalists eventually discover that the diplomat has met with foul play. Now the two men have a serious disagreement. Delmas wants to take photos of what happened and use them to create sensational headlines and plenty of attention, but Moreau wants them both to cover up what they have found and bury what they know. Given the setting for this tale, both English and French are spoken throughout the film.

Two Men in Manhattan (Deux Hommes Dans Manhattan) [ NON-USA format, NTSC, Reg. 2 Import - Japan ] Review

Of all the recent releases on the DVD/Blu-ray market, I was particularly excited to catch the debut of "Two Men in Manhattan" by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville. Melville was one of the strongest post-WWII era directors to emerge from France with a resume that included such fantastic classics as "Bob le Flambeur," "Le Samoura ," "Army of Shadows" and "Le Cercle Rouge." Thanks to the Criterion Collection, I own all of these films (and a couple of others) and have embraced the minimalist film noir qualities that stamp a Melville picture. I hadn't really heard much about the movie "Two Men in Manhattan," but I was eager to experience the 1959 New York based mystery. Despite my enthusiasm, however, the movie never really connected with me. Let's just say that this stylish endeavor is much more effective at creating a mood as opposed to telling a riveting story.

Melville, himself, plays the lead. A French United Nations delegate disappears on the day of an important vote and no one seems to know where he's gone. Melville is a reporter tasked to find the man and solve the mystery before the night is over. To do this, he'll need the assistance of someone with more unsavory connections so he enlists an opportunistic photographer played by Pierre Grasset. As the delegate's family seems to be a dead end, they have one other clue. The man was photographed around town in the company of three women. So Grasset and Melville traverse the city from a Brooklyn Burlesque, to an upscale den of inequity, to a Capital Records recording session, to a Broadway show. They talk to each of the women for a few minutes and then move on, never really getting substantial answers. On their tail, though, is a mysterious automobile. Before the sun rises, you can bet the answers will crystallize.

"Two Men In Manhattan" is certainly something you'll want to catch if you are a Melville enthusiast (and if you're not, why?). Truthfully, though, it lacks a dramatic imperative, a sense of urgency, or a compelling mystery. There is considerable pleasure to see Melville and Grasset play off each other, but no other character is of particular interest. That said, the movie is still incredibly successful as a mood piece. The gorgeous black and white cinematography and the propulsive jazz score enhance a somewhat uneventful evening. And Melville is a cool cat, I'd watch him in anything. When the men solve the mystery, I did have to ask "is that all?" With a resume filled with intriguing crime noir, this lacked much impact. A curiosity, to be sure, but certainly not a discovered classic either. Recommended for Melville fans only. KGHarris, 9/13.

Ma Vie Sexuelle ( Comment je me suis disput ... (ma vie sexuelle) ) ( My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Great Britain ] Review

If you're looking for steamy sex scenes, forget it; while this movie does deal with sex, it does so through discussion and debate, two highly-regarded French art forms! (Perhaps a lot of the disappointment surrounding this film is due to the fact that the title was inversed when it was released in the U.S.: The French title is "How I Got Into an Argument (My Sex Life).") But don't write the film off yet; it is an excellent thinking-person's romantic comedy.Mathieu Amalric is superb as Paul Dedalus, the central character of the film. (Amalric is excellent in any movie, actually.) Paul is a graduate student instructor who is brilliant, but lazy, and undecided in all the major areas of his life. He is too afraid to dedicate himself to a career as a professor, so he has been delaying writing his doctoral thesis for years. Though he has been with Esther for ten years, that does not indicate any form of commitment on his end, as he will not let the relationship mature or change in any form; he cannot break up with her, and he cannot remain faithful to her. Paul idolizes his only friend, Nathan, a professor of the same age who is not as brilliant as Paul, but has had the admirable drive to at least complete his thesis and secure a teaching post at the university. At the same time, Paul despises his ex-best friend Frederic, who is nearly as bright as Paul, but has an obsessive ambition and forceful ego that have propelled him to department chair over Paul. Paul has affairs with Nathan's girlfriend Sylvia, and her sister-in-law Valerie (both of whom have emotional/mental problems of their own), justifying that each one is better than Esther because they either have a job, a place of their own, and/or educational goals (none of which Paul really has for himself). Paul fancies himself Esther's rock, and eventually dumps her because "no one can carry the weight of someone else's responsibilities." The story, which switches between the present time, a few months earlier, and a year earlier, shows how Karma whips Paul around a bit, and forces him to come to terms with his insecurities, his future, and most importantly, his love for Esther.Paul may be the main character, but Esther (a wonderful performance from the little-seen Emmanuelle Devos) is the true hero of the film. Desplechin's direction is so subtle, yet precise, that at the beginning of the film, we aren't even aware that we are seeing Esther through Paul's eyes: At first, Esther is needy, whiney, suffocating and ugly (a reflection on his esteem for her). But in the middle of the film, after the break up, we see Esther bloom. She all of a sudden becomes stunning, but not through any superficial changes. We see Esther as she truly is: Beautiful, intelligent, and completely self-sufficient, with an amazing and quiet courage. Paul may not be able to carry her responsibility, but all along, it was actually she who carried his. Her greatest fault, as well as her best quality and strength, is her love for Paul, which he is too blind to see at first, then later realizes. (Another credit to Desplechin's direction: Even when Esther is most angry at Paul, you unconsciously see him through her eyes, and see just how charming and intelligent she thinks him to be.) If you're a girl whose heart has been broken, you will relate to Esther's silent moments, her wailing moments, and her struggle to move on with her life.Don't expect things to tie up neatly; real life never resolves itself in simple, concrete ways, and neither do French films. Along with Esther and Paul's doings, we also peek into the lives of Paul's friends and family members, who are all in their mid-twenties and early thirties, and are similarly at crossroads-with-no-signs points in their lives. This large cast of characters plays out the problem of intellectual youth: As bright as they are about academic matters, they are ignorant when it comes to human relationships, including the way they view themselves. Probably also attributed to the otherwise admirable French qualities of discussion and debate, they rationalize or theorize too much on their problems and situations in order to avoid making decisions or taking responsibility for their actions. Do not be put off by the serious and cerebral topics of this film: It is extremely funny, but in an intelligent sort of way. Very little of the humor is physical or circumstantial (although it does have its moments where you will burst out laughing, such as the scene where the monkey gets stuck behind the heater, which a previous reviewer mentioned). "My Sex Life" also offers an alternative view to Paris; it is the setting for all of Paul's romantic moments, but the city has never looked so grey, which reflects the loneliness of the students' lives as they struggle to find love, while blind to the love that is already there. No glamourous scenes, no sunny makes-you-happy-to-be-alive moments; this movie is as gritty as real life, and just as interesting.Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos were both nominated for Most Promising Actor and Actress Cesar awards (the French version of the Oscar)for this film.
