Reckless: The Sequel [VHS] Review

For a thinking (and older) woman, this is IT. It's a hilarious plot based on a very sound and subtle understanding of the choices you may have made at times in your life when you didn't have the confidence to ask yourself, "What is it that really makes me happy?" -- and what it takes to come back to those choices. The show is brilliantly and meticulously cast, from the principals to the minor roles. There are some shows that make you feel like you actually "lived" them -- that you got into one of the lives in the show and actually felt the emotions the characters are working though -- this is one of them.

Abril Despedaçado [VHS] Review

The story in this film is simple: blood for blood feuding between two families in the backlands of Brazil. If left at that, this would be a conceptually boring movie, one done hundreds of times in various locations for varying Hollywood budgets. The glory of BEHIND THE SUN is in the presentation and transformation of a familiar precis into a visually stunning prolonged motion painting. Director Salles has assembled a cast of beautiful actors, minimized the Portuguese dialog so that the visuals may convey the text almost solo, and has added appropriations from other art forms to make this a memorable film. The only characters outside the feuding families are a traveling troupe of 'clowns' or a circus consisting of an older man and his senusously beautiful stepdaughter. This nod to the "I PAGLIACCI" opera invests intrigue and introduces the concept of the redeeming force of love into this otherwise blighted life story of a young man doomed to die for family honor. The photography is elegant, the acting is superb, the musical scoring is sensitively appropriate without drawing attention to itself. This is a very beautiful, very fine film.

Sharpe's Honour [VHS] Review

Being enthralled with the Sharpe series, I have really nothing negative to say about any of the installments. Sharpe's Honour is no different. Following the tragic "Sharpe's Enemey", "..Honor finds Sharpe further put upon by having to restore his tarnished reputation, thanks to a frame-up by his nemesis, Ducos. It's a rousing story, told well, filmed well. The two amusing things of notice is Sharpe's chosen men start to dwindle ridiculously low and This epsiode marks the beginning of the "Love interest of the week" scenerio that will continue in the following stories. Nevertheless, it's a great poignant episode in the series and a must have for any Sharpe collector.

Todd Rundgren - Live in San Francisco [VHS] Review

Something new for Todd fans. First off, all Todd fans will thoroughly enjoy seeing the Power Trio in concert on DVD....with great songs like Open My Eyes, Number One Lowest Common Denominator and the Ikon....great to finally get these songs live! Not that this title was a quicky (well maybe it was), but there are several things that bothered me about it, especially when comparing it to earlier releases. There are no liner notes or anything like that. There is nothing that takes advantage of the DVD format (no special features short of an index and a way to adjust the sound)....this point is a little upsetting because of Todd's love for anything digital. The camera angles are sometimes akward....can't explain it, but with 80% shot from a crane looking down at Todd, it just seems kind of wierd. Shots of Kasim are often fuzzy. As far as the music, sometimes its amazing, sometimes its tentative. There's also no chit-chat from Todd and with a very sparse stage and Kasim often stepping back during Todd's solos, it seems empty. Please understand that these are not complaints, just comments. I love the DVD and am going to watchi it over and over and over. Would I show it to my non-Todd friends (that's what us Todd fanatics do...try to convert people), I might lean towards some of the other titles. OK, so where is the Ringo Tour and the Abbey Road tour...we're all waiting for those!

Agnes of God Review

Agnes of God has a very tight script, plot and cinematography. It is gripping from end to end. The film is not about religion but about the inter-personal and intra-personal conflicts of a psychiatrist, the mother superior of a community of nuns and one of her young nuns.Set in Montreal, the movie opens with a very young, pretty nun being discovered unconscious and splattered with a lot of blood. A dead newborn baby is also discovered in the room.Presumably, unknown to anyone, the nun, Sister Agnes (Meg Tilly), had been pregnant, and she strangled the baby immediately upon its birth. She is charged with manslaughter.A psychiatrist, Dr. Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda), is summoned by the court to make a diagnosis of the woman. Initially Dr. Livingston resisted the assignment, because she said, it was an open and shut case. The community of nuns is cloistered, and for Dr. Livingston to do her job, she must penetrate the world of the cloister. She is not at all congenial or sympathetic towards the nuns. It turns out she has her own emotional ax to flail against the church.Mother Miriam Ruth (Anne Bankcroft), the mother superior of the convent, is equally hostile to Dr. Livingston. She is adamantly opposed to having a psychiatrist diagnose Sister Agnes, but she has no choice since it is a legal matter. She is faced with the dilemma of sending her young charge go to jail or the nuthouse. Later on, it comes out that the prioress has been keeping a few secrets of her own related to the issue.Everyone denies knowing the girl was pregnant. No one has any idea how it happened. Its obvious the postulate/novice is suffering from a serious psychiatric illness, or several. She has the social and emotional development of a na�ve grade school child. The few surprises and plot twists are well spaced and more than enough to keep the plot flowing. I found all of the characters and action credible. The three main characters are all multi-dimensional. The Mother Superior is well rounded, a mature person and leader, full of flaws and dragging a lifetime of baggage. Sister Agnes is the epitome of innocence and purity. She comes across as truly otherworldly. Her singing symbolizes both. I was a little disappointed in Dr. Livingston. Considering she was a psychiatrist, I thought she was a too lacking in self-knowledge. Her chain smoking was both annoying and symbolic. Dr. Livingston's assigned task is diagnosing Sister Agnes only, not cure her, but Dr. Livingston quickly channels her anger into passionately trying to help her. Blue Crush [VHS] Review

I walked into the theatre expecting a fun summer flick to bring me out of a very depressing, stress filled, health concerning summer. What I got was far beyond that! Having lived 22 of my 38 years in sunny beach towns, I was brought back to Life!!!
Yes- it was a little mindless storyline, but hey - how many surfers could handle something deeper?!? Isn't that who this was made for? I fell deep into the movie. Every scene had something I could relate to. I could smell the ocean, taste and feel the salty water dried on my skin. Feel the rush of a wipe out that is so intense you don't know up from down when you're being thrown spinning in the water; and coming up for air only to take another hit and get that water blown up your nose again! Then, when you finally get out, find major road rash on your face that is burning from the salt water. Surfers - are you relating to this? Anyone who has been there should. Surf Divas - your sex doesn't matter! Surfing is surfing! I have seen this movie four times and am now anxiously awaiting the release of the DVD. I am planning a huge Luau on it's release date. The acting was good (not great) and the storyline was cute but not what 'The Academy' looks for. But, don't tell me you didn't laugh at the "Pro Bowl" athletes more than once! Overall, everyone fell into their characters very well. However, if this movie doesn't at least get mentioned for cinematography ... there all crazy!! This is a definate 'feel good' movie. You can't help but sing along (great soundtrack) and yell "oh, wo, holy..." when it comes right down to it. Bottom Line - A Must See! Only you can decide for yourself.

Ghosts of Mars [VHS] Review

It's John Carpenter, so what does everyone expect? I know what I expected, and "Ghosts of Mars" pretty much delivered. Thudding sound track, B-movie dialogue, heads on stakes, "Road Warrior" like zanies with metal sticking out of their faces stalking the "good" guys. Bring on the popcorn. Then there's a humorous twist. The "guys" in this future world live in a Matriarchy. Guys make the coffee, defer to the women, but also are told to deal with mechanical problems when they arise. (Well, at least the "breeder" - Jason Statham as Jericho - does.) Carpenter works all kinds of little jokes into the script on this wrinkle alone. Natasha Henstridge as the tough cop hero, and Ice Cube, as the con hero, are serviceable - and they know when to shoot, kick, and punch. And that's all that's needed here. I don't know who the main Martian is (he looks like Marilyn Manson in Kabuki), but he's perfect! Four stars for operating well within genre.
