Top Secret! [VHS] Review

Top Secret! - the Jim Abrahams/Zucker Bros.' follow-up to Airplane! - does for (or is that *to*) Elvis movies and WWII espionage films what the earlier feature did for/to the airborne disaster genre. The gags are slightly more immature (not necessarily a bad thing, but in some cases may have been better had they been allowed to age a little before being put into production), but some, like the forced-perspective oversize phone or saying farewell to the Scarecrow, rival anything the ZAZ team has ever done. The music is a mixed bag. "Skeet Surfing" and the Macy's jingle are great. "Tutti-Fruitti" and "Straighten the Rug" are less so (not that every song in an Elvis movie was worthy of screen time, either). Kudos to Val Kilmer, though; even when he's camping it up, the musical numbers remain watch- and listenable.The only thing I don't care for on the disc is the audio commentary. The production team really rips the movie apart as if they had tried to make a "serious" film that fell apart. In that case, learning why/how it failed would be interesting and instructive. To shred a spoof film, especially a sophomore and sophomoric effort like Top Secret!, is entirely unwarranted. Sure there are plot holes. Sure it makes no sense that submarine would crash into a prison dungeon. Sure some things are only mildly amusing. Drawing undue attention to them is doubly pointless. Sheesh! If you're a big fan, skip the commentary.I really enjoyed this movie and really (mostly) enjoyed its presentation on the DVD. There aren't a lot of extras, but be sure to hunt for the Easter Egg - it's definitely worth finding. Zandalee [VHS] Review

While in New Orleans 13 or so years ago, we noticed that a movie was being shot in Jackson Square. A really beautiful actress was jogging through the Square and a bunch of mimes and street people were doing their thing in the back ground. A couple of years later, planning a return trip to NO, I picked up Zandalee in the rental place. We immediately noticed that it was the movies we had seen being made. So, maybe that makes me give it a better rating than if I had just rented it with no "connection" to the movie.

I agree with almost every review that the girl is breathtakingly beautiful, her husband is pathetic and Johnny is a scary loser. You wonder why in the world Zandalee would even speak to him much less have sex over and over with him. That said, the scene early in the AM with Johnny working on the garbage truck and her panties hitting the ground is about the sexiest thing filmed especially since you see nothing further in that scene.

I suppose the ending is almost a requirement but the movie would have been better without it.

If you love New Orleans and its sleasiness and can handle a seemingly normal young woman having a mindless affair with a loser, this is a great movie. We own the VHS version and watch it at least every year or so. Usually, we cut it off right before the end. The sex/love scenes are very good if not explicit enough to rate an X. This is the movie Nicolas Cage never admits to having made.

B.U.S.T.E.D. Review

Goldie and David Bowie star in this gritty crime thriller. The film opens with Ray (Andrew Goth) and Terry (Goldie) getting released from jail. The two are cousins, long-time friends, and fellow gang members. Ray wants to go straight, have a family and a real job. Terry wants to get back in the business and does so with a life of crime. He makes a killing selling drugs to school kids, enlarges his already sizeable arsenal, and intimidates all who encroach on his turf, especially a mysterious Chinese gang. During Terry's incarceration, gang matters were left to the button-down super-efficient dealings of Bernie (Bowie); after his release, tensions between the two thugs rapidly build. Seeing Ray's return to the straight life as weakness, the evil jealous Terry kidnaps and tortures Ray's girlfriend. Ray resolves to get revenge and an ultra-violent shoot out soon ensues.The ending shall leave you in suspense......

Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas Review

As usual PRINCE is great in concert, and here is the DVD to prove it. Whether or not you were onboard with his last CD THE RAINBOW CHILDREN, there's plenty here to keep fans interested. It's gorgeously filmed, and very funky. Throw in Sheila E on percussion and Eric Leeds on horns, and you have a reason to dress in purple paisley once again. Straight up this is just a live performance with no frills. But interestingly enough it's priced low enough to make it more affordable than seing Prince live. He seems laid back and happy to be on stage, and he works his magic on every track from "Pop Life" to a blistering rendition of Led Zeplin's "Whole Lotta Love". One interesting thing I noticed was that the sound varied a little. As he moves around the stage the vocals seem to get louder or softer. It may not bug you since this is pretty much a natural thing live, but audio purists may wonder why they didn't adjust the levels to keep it all uniform for home viewing.

Mami Cheb: Live 2004 Review

I know there are avid fans of other artists in the Rai genre, and I have listened to many them. But for me, Cheb Mami is the cream which has floated to the top. His singing sounds effortless, unstrained and unhurried. That being said, there is a passion in his voice that could motivate a stone to commit immoral deeds---which is probably why he has been banned in the Arab-speaking world---funniest thing is, if you go to a private party, they all love him! OK enough on world politics.

The rumor is that Sting heard Cheb's singing coming out of some nightclub in Paris and raced in to see who was singing---asked him to sing on his Desert Rose album and the rest is history. Well, that's where I first heard Cheb---on Sting's album. It took a little sleuthing, but I found out who it was and have been an avid fan for several years. This is a fab live disc and I play it almost constantly. Another good one is 'Let Me Rai". That disc has an amazing swath of styles on it (a Scottish rock drum march, sung in Arabic? Go on wif yer bad self) that will leave you tapping your toes. After listening to it several times, you'll be singing along (phonetically) to some of the most infectious music on earth.

The Corruptor [VHS] Review

This film seems to better represent the Chinese, Chow Yun Fat especially, in American film. Recent efforts by HK film stars have resulted in the terrible stereotyping that always takes place in Hollywood. Rushhour and Lethal Weapon 4 both made objects of their Chinese stars, Chan and Li, respectively. The Corruptor shows the respect neccesary of an actor like Chow Yun Fat, one of the finest and most prolific actors that has ever lived. It deals with the Chinese in a more mature way, almost as if previous knowledge is helpful in fully understanding the movie. The only problem with this movie is that Fat is better than it. No one can expect Foley to provide the action neccesary to impress an American audience that knows Fat, but in American action standards he does fine. The opening to the film is a very intense shoot-out in a Chinese lamp shop and later in the film a Chinese song is actually played as the prominent background music. The film's mood is dark and dramatic. A very well done film.
